I really need some advice. I got a great deal on this cabbing, trim saw combination, and it was a Star Diamond 6" x1", so that did it for me. The problem is that it came with stone wheels which have been cupped over time in usage. I have gone over the equipment, and I remain impressed with SD engineering, but times change, and all my 6" wheels are now 1.5" I need to change out the wheels. I have the Barranca owner's manual for the same unit (some minor peripheral changes), To get to the point, I am not comfortable with lifting the shaft out of the unit, and I am really do not know if trimming the spacers by 1" to accommodate the extra 1" for the new wheels is up to my ability. Where would you go to get some help in getting this equipment "fixed?" There is no readily available "Lapidary Equipment repairs in my area. I am not sure if I have to replace the bearings, but I am not up to that level yet. I do keep reading and learning, but just keeping up with carving, sanding and polishing is almost full time. Thanks for any suggestions.

If you know a good machinist or millwright, probably a lot of good help. Try to not hand it to someone to work on it w/o being able to be there and learn.

What is your shaft diameter? I know a lot of the older units used aluminum spacers but a lot of people are using pvc these days, I wouldn't think you would need to trim the old ones just get some pvc or aluminum tubing the same diameter as your shaft and cut new ones just need a hacksaw and if you screw up it won't break the bank just cut until you get it right. I hope that I am thinking about the same kind of spacers you have.

If your unit is like the one in my pictures this type of design is one of the easiest to work on.this is a pillow block design. Because the two grinding wheels are between the bearings it is the most stable design. Problem is that you have to take it out of the bearings to change the wheels. Frantoms were made this way. My point is that because the wheels are between the bearings you can pretty much move the wheelsany which way . Make them smaller, bigger add a xtra one.if the body allows it. And none of this will affect it adversly unless in is a bad out of balance wheel. This is the perfect machine for a beginer to modify.

Thanks everyone. If push comes, KN sells 6 x 1 shaping and forming diamond wheels. Skinny but I am careful about falling off wheel edges. I will try to see if my 6 x 1.5 can be tolerated. The Barranca unit comes with 1.5 width 6" units.

It is very easy to remove the shaft. The current "Cab Combo" BD unit has a hinge in back and your unit likely has screws. Remove two nuts on top cover. Remove screws from back if there. Remove screws holding saw table down. Remove left hand thread nut for blade and remove. Lift shaft assembly out. To change wheels you have to remove at least one bearing. If the SC wheels are not worn down to paper labels on sides you can buy a wheel dresser to flatten the surface again. BD uses a 5/8" shaft with aluminum spacers. If you cut the spacers or buy spacers they must be completely square. If you have to use a machine shop or metal fabricating shop buy your wheels and take the shaft assembly and wheels to them. Have them install the wheels cutting original spacers as needed. It would be best if you learn to do these things yourself as a big part of using lapidary equipment is maintaining it. And changing wheels is a routine thing. If you want to remove the bearings it can be difficult if they have been on a long time. Some used units I have refurbished had apparently had many SC wheel changes and slid apart easily. Some not so much.
