What do they have there? No-see-ums? Horseflies the size of fighter jets?

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. When I read your description of Vermont, except for the mosquitos, it reminded me of KCMO. Especially the newspaper.

I moved to cape cod after retirement and except for the ultra conservative moneyed folks it is pretty damn good. Lots of artists and quirky people with a real positive vibe. Spring sucks but I get away a couple of times a year in winter and spring instead of summer and fall and that works well. Massachusetts has lots of hard working , family oriented passionate smart people. Very competitive but if yo can make it here you'll find a very happy place to be. Instead of rocks we have shells and clams and oysters and scallops and lobsters and striped bass. I still have two sons in Mass and two Grandchildren here, that's influential. I have family all around the country but except for my sister in Moraga, my immediate siblings and my Mother are in New Jersey. I was able to drive down there in less than 5 hours for a 50th year reunion of my 68 person HS graduating class last weekend. I can still get to Maine, NH, RI, CT, and Vt in an hour or two. I can drive to Boston or Providence in an hour plus to catch a flight to almost anywhere.
Before I retired I considered a lot of places and always thought I'd move west or maybe the mountains of NC or Ga. I loved Southern Utah for rockhounding and natural beauty. Springdale by Zion was real artsy and I love Sedona AZ but after my wife broke her wrist Az got of my "A" list. The Black Hills and Jackson Hole are worth considering but rock wise it is hard to beat Utah, Zona, NM, and Wyoming. Except maybe Oregon and I still havent tried Idaho
