So, retirement is coming up in 3 or 4 years and while I love Colorado I'm thinking of moving somewhere closer to good rock hounding. Only thing close to Ft C are the diamond pipes on the WY border and getting access there is all but impossible. Let's open the gates and see where everyone would settle if they could. Thanks

We've been here for almost 40 years, and don't plan on moving. Besides, the dishes are done and the floors are clean. I don't recommend that anybody resettle to Silicon Valley (San Jose area). Much too expensive --- in the top 10 in the US.

I like where I am. Plenty of great collecting within a few hours of driving and the weather is pretty decent most of the year.

If I could I would settle back home (Minnesota) in the summer time anyways and Washington state has always been in my top 5 places to live.

Home base in southern Arizona, warm and sunny, then travel where ever when its not cold, snowy, flooding, windy, or otherwise inclimate there.

My husband's uncle retired to Hurricane Utah and I would move there in a moment if I could.

^^^^ We moved from NJ to Utah, I'm 10 minutes from Hurricane in Toquerville. I was not a rock hound until a few years ago and only seriously for a year or so. This area has a lot going for it, temperate Winters but very hot Summers. there are ways to escape the heat, though.

I like where I am. Plenty of great collecting within a few hours of driving and the weather is pretty decent most of the year. I'll second Nevada and add the best benefit, after the rocks, is the lack of state personal income tax. Ohhhh And a near lack of snow is solid too!

We moved to Oregon eight years go...Awesome hounding around here.. Western Oregon sucks (populated) but eastern Oregon is more wilderness country, less people...That's a good mark...

Every place has good and bad points. That said, we got out of CO in 2007-I first moved there in 1979, it's a completely different place now. Moved to Wyoming, which I loved. Now we're in Nevada and it's fine, too. Picture looking south across the road from the house this morning. Those are deer tracks at the bottom of the first photo. Good luck. Russ

I hate snow and like heat. After deciding to eave fuggin CommieMexifornia, we initially thought Arizona but it is way too heavily populated for us now, and water is scarce. Decided Texas for a ton of reasons. Good gun and knife laws, lots of good rock sites, lots of horses and fairly cheap land. Lots of water, wildlife, no state income tax, friendly people, good politics ( Feels like you are actually in America, not some Commie, sanctuary state sh*thole), low crime rate and lots of wide open space and sunshine. Still have friends out west and after hearing what all is going on, would not go back to CommieMexifornia if they paid me a buttload of money....Mel

Anyplace but Oregon, we got too many people now. Amen to that! I still love the place, but population growth has spoiled so many areas. If you do come for a visit, find 2 of our residents to take home with you - they are mostly housebroken, though they require $7 cups of coffee every 4 hours or they turn vicious

I can't recommend Vermont. Rock collecting is not great, increasingly everybody is in everybody else's face, the place seems to be run by a mob-ocracy of elitists where the ones who yell the most and make themselves the most obnoxious are the ones who get their way. The weather is miserable much of the time, the rocks are frozen in or covered with snow, the taxes are high and climbing, and in the name of 'tolerance' the populace is increasingly INtolerant of any ideas but their own. The newspapers don't even pretend to be balanced or informative anymore -- they just post a very liberal position, and next to it, they post -- guess what? ANOTHER very liberal position! (They used to actually print a counter-point.)
In short, if you are an ultra-liberal who doesn't want to consider any other viewpoints, and you like high taxes, disappearing personal liberty, and lots of mosquitoes, Vermont is the place for you!
At least the beer is excellent.

Cool stuff, thanks team. I don't do heat well. Course my Chancellor of the Exchequer, she loves the heat. If it were up to me I'd head to the Black Hills. Got a feeling though that after I retire my voting stock on where to live will shrink to 49%. Barely 51% now while I'm working. Can't believe I'm even considering moving back east but I remember some great hounding in my younger days around Spruce Pine NC, Amelia Courthouse, and Mineral VA. Oh well, guess I'll just wait and see what the good Lord has in store for me. When the time comes along the place will show up.

New Mexico has 4 seasons, but they are mild. Our generally moderate elevations moderate summer and the thin air moderates winter. Low human population level so low cost of land and cost of living in general. Population diversity and lots of recreational opportunities. Oh and . . . we have rocks. I moved from Ft Collins to here and can appreciate both places, but NM wins hands down.

Iowa isn't bad from mid May til mid October, BUT , why anyone would want to be here the rest of the year I have NO idea !
Either they are too dumb or too poor to move !
If I ever dumb luck my way into a big lottery win I will probably run up a hell of a long distance phone bill calling folks I know to say goodbye !
