This is part two to my obsidian post last week. As most of you know obsidian needs a lot of filler in the final stages so the batches get split into two after 120/220. There are a few that developed flaws. That is normal so I left them in the picture. Those few will get pulled and ran again in the future Chuck

I love Obsidian, have had good results, still trying for better. I did really increase my ceramics and that helped, also running longer in polish.

These spent 48 hours in the polish stage in the lot-o Chuck Lot O, 72 hours with CO. Prepping in rotary, QT66, running 7 days, changing grit and running 4 days. Running the rotary very full with ceramics, really helped keeping down the bruising/chipping.

WinFor what is worth these were tumbled in stage (46/70) one at normal fill level in a mixed rock batch containing mostly agates and jaspers. No fillers no smalls. Stage two in the loto 120/220 SC for 48 hours. Stage three loto 500 AO for 96 hours. Stage four was AO polish from the rockshed for 48 hours. That's it in a nutshell. Not even a burnish stage. All of my obsidian and apache tears go through stage one in mixed rock batches with no specail treatment. I set them aside at stage one clean outs to run in dedicated batches when they hit the loto though. Plenty of different recipes out there but this one has never failed me. Chuck

Chuck This is how I always did my obsidian and apache tears also (well close enough). The only difference was I only did 48 hours in 500AO and added 48 hours in 1000AO. There were always some that developed a chip or scratch. I grabbed them after final polish and threw them back into general population.

I didn't have good results with the RS AO Polish, switching to the CO really helped. I run 120/220 48 hrs, AO500 96 hours, CO 72 hrs and then burnish with 2 tpsp Borax and some Ivory Soap shavings. I'll adjust a bit and see what happens, should run some next week.

When I first started I was messing around with cerium and tin oxide but for at least the last five years I have used AO polish 100% of the time. Hopefully nothing has changed with what is being sold now. I have mentioned before that I originally learned how to run obsidian from the tutorial tntmom made available. It is harder to find now but I have a copy if you would like it. Chuck

Thanks, I have that copy and that's pretty much what I follow. With the AO, I just couldn't get a glassy polish, switched to CO and it worked. I use AO for all my other runs, just finished a mixed batch, mostly crazy lace, came out great. Here's my first batch of Obsidian.
