I am from Utah, I am a civil engineer.
I have been part of many major construction, earth moving projects over the past 25 yrs. and seen millions of tons of virgin earth, blown up, dug out, and placed. I never ever thought anything about the material being moved, only cared about how fast and if its being placed correctly, Until I was sent to the west desert of Utah, our job was to move 12 million cubic yards of solid rock down to a level of 300' to 700' below natural ground by blowing it up, and trucking it out in 3 locations. all of witch are property of BrushWellman beryllium mine.
Brush is 30 miles from cell service, 70 from any town or anything, we all lived there 5 days a week, no TV , no phone, just the desert! I miss that place. anyhow, after 3 + yrs, 3 mines, and exploring every other old ass mine there, I have become a rock hound! I have seen rocks that are beautiful, every color, every size, Tiffany Stone, biggest one was 8' tall by 40' long, Topaz Mtn is 1 mile away, If anyone is interested in the geology there, let me know because I have seen every kind of that stone and things I have never seen in a mineral book. just an amazing area.

Greetings from N.C. Welcome to the forum. BTW, I'm jealous of all you folks who have instant access, either through work or leisure, to all those interesting rocks. Where I'm from, we have white quartz, blue slate, and sandstone. With the diverse group on here, you can learn a little bit of everything rock related.

Its never to late to bring home some of those pretty rocks and to try to make them prettier or at least save them from obscurity. Your perspective will undoubtedly add depth to some of the discussions. Join us.

Welcome Shawn, from Texas hillcountry. I love the roaring silence of the desert. Those first minutes after turning off the truck and walking a mile or so.
