Greetings all New guy here. Just bought a place in Arizona and have started rock hounding. Once I have them, then what? This seems to be the next step in that direction. Looking at getting a vibratory and a rotary tumbler. I'll be reading all the forums so I can figure out what to do, and what not Thanks in advance for the help. Regards

Hi and welcome to the forum and to the state of Arizona. I live northwest of Phoenix. I would say it would depend on how much money you want to spend on the new to you hobby. I would be wanting to buy a saw to cut the rocks then a tumbler to tumble them then lapidary equipment to make cabs and such but you may not be wanting to invest a lot at first. I will warn you that rockhounding addictive but really really fun.

Welcome from Michigan. I'm glad you decided to start reading before buying. That's what I did and I have been happy with my purchases. We get a lot of new people coming here after making some bad decisions on which tumbler to purchase. Be sure to check out The Rock Shed when looking at prices. They seem to have the best prices around and have a very good reputation with people here.

Looking at getting a vibratory and a rotary tumbler. I'll be reading all the forums so I can figure out what to do, and what not Thanks in advance for the help. Regards Welcome! Like others have said - first thing is the need to identify your primary interest and then what budget you have. A caveat - I'm new to the hobby again but am done going through everything you just did - and am hoping you avoid purchasing the wrong equip like I did lol. Do you want to mostly tumble? The cheapest way (saw wise) is to use a tile saw. See Garage Rocker - he is using a tile saw setup for under $100 and his tumbles are a.m.a.z.i.n.g. A saw is not needed to tumble but it is helpful - search some his threads and you'll see why. If price isn't a major issue and tumbling is your primary objective - I would start with a the Lortone QT-66 with 2 6lb barrels and later get the 12lb barrel. Then, I would get a Lot-O vibratory tumbler to complete stages 2 through polish with. No one here who has purchased a Lot-O has been disappointed that I have noticed. Let us know what you're thinking price wise and interest wise (tumbling vs cabs etc) and many here can guide you.

wayne40559 - Not sure what town in AZ, but there are lots of rock clubs. Join one or a couple. You'll be able to use club equipment & learn before you buy. You may also be offered used equipment at great prices. Club members are like that. Lynn

Good evening and welcome from North Carolina. I'm already jealous of you due to all the interesting stuff available in arizona. Happy hounding, but be forewarned, you'll end up with your head full of rocks. LOL.

Welcome to the forum.
There are all sorts of things you can do with the rocks. Tumble, cab, trade, display specimens, crafts, etc.

And your garage, and, and... Have fun! Welcome from San Manuel, AZ.

Stay away from Harbor Freight with any equipment.....Lortone is a top notch rotary tumbler and a few more that cost a bit more, but worth the investment.....As for Vibes, I'm not very familiar with them...Many people are on the forum.. Welcome to RTH!

Hello from Italy. Me too, I'm sure that 1) reading 2) learning from others 3)buy equipment is the best sequence! Keep us updated on what you're doing.
