I just discovered that the Geological Survey of Canada Memoir 262 is available for free on the web. I had to sign on to Google Play Store to download, but no big deal. I was looking for info on the Fraser River serpentines, and it had good descriptions of occurrence. And I'm presuming it would be equally detailed for many other special places in Canada. Enjoy the fruits of Canadian geological research. The book can even be read in android form.

Does anything like that exist for places in the US? I'd love to get out and do some hounding, but having no knowledge of geology, I really don't know where to begin. I wouldn't mind traveling some, but would like to be somewhat certain there will be something worth driving for. Don't have the time or desire to dig up the whole country looking for something to tumble.

Whoops. The title extends far beyond the volume I purchased, which focuses on the Ashcroft Map Area (Fraser River area of British Columbia). That must suggest that other volumes exist for other areas of Canada (also likely to be free and available. More research needed. nchillbilly Similar resources do exist. Many USGS publication are available on line, but its deciding which are digestable for a layperson, etc. There is a very good overview book of the Minerology of New Mexico, now somewhat old, but an excellent review that often points me to areas not normally described in rock hound sources. The Roadside Geology series (state by state) is a great resource, but its not free. I just googled minerals of North Carolina and Geology of North Carolina and came up with options that looked interesting including: digital.ncdcr.gov/cdm/ref/collection/p16062coll9/id/13531which is part of the state library's digital collections. Geology of Moore county, NC anyone.
