The obsidian fascinates me How do you cut it? I've never cut any Well except for the slab that I made into 3 pieces. Brought the blade all the way down then ran the slab thru the blade. manofglass cut some and I'm sure jamesp has as well ? It cuts like butter on a tile saw. To avoid chips and vibration breakageuse a glass cutting tile saw blade since tile saws spin at a fast 3600 RPM. Glass blade will cut as thin as 1/8 inch slabs without breaking the obsidian if you use the rip fence and push stock thru slow. Lots of water best.

Glad your baby has recuperated Alison. That had to be a scare.
You might watch some Youtube's on polishing glass as it is the same as obsidian. I will ask Janke since he puts a wet shine on his vase bases. I believe it is a sanding belt or flat lap till you get to about 1200 to 2000 grit, then cerium oxide on a buff wheel. Pumice is often used for some reason to obtain polish or pre-polish, not sure.
Ah, cool beans - check this dude out. Homemade pumice based hand wash from the car parts place to polish glass:
You might be abled to stretch a white towel out and coat it with a little pumice hand cleaner and polish by hand by rubbing obsidian against it vigorously. I would try it first with a little bit of pumice hand cleaner and not keep adding it as it may be breaking the pumice down to smaller and smaller polish sized particles.

Hey, I may see 'polished over' grooves or scratches running from top to bottom in glare in photo. Like saw marks or grind wheel marks. They have been polished but I believe you may have skipped a step. Not sure, but looks like it from photo

Yep, those grooves running vertical will retard your polish. Tumbling analogy, skipping 220 and 500 in tumbler and going straight to 1000 and polish.

Most of those I worked out. Only 3 steps used with the dry burnishing Some spots still there, but they are hard to see now

OK then, you seen them and you worked them and you now have a fine gem. You should be proud MsAli. I have a 14 pound door stop of fine sheen rainbow. I need to start sawing it and get the angles right to display the sheen. I would go the lazy route and tumble polish pieces of it. I put some obsidian in the glass kiln, lol, it rose like a cake in the oven and turned into a chunk of beautiful pumice. On Ebay last year:

Show a picture of the "pumice" I believe pumice is simply overheated obsidian = boiled, it is normal for glass to boil and bubble at ~ 1700F and higher depending on formulation Snowflake before Snowflake after 1500F = perfect pumice = boiled glass a few varieties of obsidian I have played with www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/37587701282/sizes/l

Very nice pieces! The obsidian is really awesome. I'm glad you posted this because I have a bunch of obsidian and did not realize it was a somewhat different animal to work with. You had me for a moment with the one pic above.... thought I was seeing some beautiful textures or iris-ing. It was definitely a reflection of a succulent!

Ali, sorry I'm late seeing this thread. Glad your daughter will be OK - nothing more stressful for a parent than to see their child suffering Beautiful work with the obsidian. I can say in all honesty that obsidian and I don't get along and it has gotten the better of me. I tried to cab it a few times early on and basically quit trying because I couldn't get it right.

Thank you-It was very scary and I still haven't been able to sleep. Up all night worried about her
I cant believe you would have trouble with it. Your cabs are so good!
