So on this one there's a couple of dark spots. I'm not sure if it would have been better to just saw those parts off and make a smaller stone, but this thing had glitter all through it and it's kinda cool just as is I think. I'm slowly working my way through my jar of rough Aussie opal I bought back in January and working on some of the nicer bits I'd been kinda holding back on until I figured the stuff out a bit.

Looks like a great cut, Tim.
With the fire appearing to go throughout the opal you probably would have been OK removing the spots. But I know how risky it can be. I've sometimes left a tiny defect or two if I think that removal could go badly. But I once had the opposite happen on a little opal, discovering a tiny, slight scratch when it was finished. I took it out and the fire brightened considerably. Roll of the dice.

Opal has definitely been the most difficult stone I've messed with so far, and the most rewarding when it goes right.
