Washington here!
Don’t know how I stumbled to this website, but I love geology and I love polishing rocks. So indefinitely had to join. Will be vacationing to Puerto Rico — any good minerals out that way that I can rockhound for? Let me know.
Happy polishing!
Zack

Puerto Rico is a beautiful place! Haven't been there for around a half century, but there are some fossils, agate and common opal, but the main problem is finding anywhere to collect: most is private land. You might want to check on what you can collect in El Yunque National Forest. There are state forests, too, such as Toro Negro, though I don't know what restrictions there may be on collecting. Certainly there are minerals (e.g., around Orocovis, near Toro Negro) and even a little alluvial gold (at least back in Columbus' day). Otherwise, there may be opportunities in roadcuts along federal and state roads in the highlands. You could also ask at the universities in San Juan and Mayaguez, as well as take a look and ask at small-town markets while driving around. While the hurricane undoubtedly uncovered some interesting rocks, I know that rockhounds have recently been banned from collecting on some of the islands due to soil disturbance frustrating efforts to shore up unstable hillsides and restore vegetative cover, so you'll want to ask about any current restrictions.

You might keep your eyes open for fossil corrals. They can cab up spectacularly and are largely unexplored by the lapidary community.
