Hi, I bought my grandchildren a tumbler but they wanted instant gratification and quickly lost interest. I, on the other hand, have gotten into this and can’t wait until I can get beautiful results predictably. I just turned 70 and am retiring from 40 years of dentistry. I have recently taken up woodworking and now with this hobby I should be able to keep busy. Thanks for providing this forum and thanks in advance for helping me with all the questions I have. Jim

Hey there cowboy, this is your friend in Atlanta welcoming you to the RTH. By the way, hang on to that Buffalo Dental Tools #15 drill. I love mine for rock carving and you will too.

Instant gratification means: 1. buy a cab machine and in 15 minutes you will be dazzling your observers. 2. buy a vibratory tumbler and use it to enhance beach cobbles (they are already shaped (especially if you are selective) and polished (again you are picking up the ones that stay somewhat shiney after they dry and at least look pretty when wet; processing can be 1 week not a month or two, and oh yeah, 3. if you have dental equipment and can remove irregularities and enhance the shape, you can make a pendant or pocket rock in minutes. Faster than wood working and it lasts forever. What more can you ask?

Welcome to the club! Hope you still have your dental tools, they will be great to enhance anything you will see in your tumbling results. And at times, you might still need those dental skills.... Foul language project WIP by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr

Welcome to the Forum jimmyt from Northern California! I understand how you came to be interested in the hobby all too well... I got hooked by researching a new hobby for my Grandson (age 14 now) a year and a half ago. My gift of a tumbler kit is still in the top of his closet, opened but unused. Someday...
