Hello, my name is Ali.
I've been collecting rocks since I was old enough to stuff them in my pockets. I'm a complete novice when it comes knowing what I find from my state (Wisconsin), I usually just kept them because I liked the way they looked. I recently received a rock tumbler so that's pretty exciting!
My other hobbies include photography, hiking, wildlife, raising monarch butterflies and generally most things outdoors.
Also in the last year I learned that my family owned a Fluorspar mine in Hardin County, IL, hoping one day to be able to visit and learn more about it.

Welcome from Southern California. Monarchs? This should look vaguely familiar then.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!
I'm not sure how to reply to a message and insert a photo so I'm just going to it add it on here. These are few of the 100 + monarchs I raised and tagged last year.

Tagged? Interesting. The wife got into it last year, and I help her with it. We started late and probably released around 30. She's gotten her sister into it as well. If the raising is done outside, the plants/caterpillars have to be relocated inside of a screened habitat. We have tachinid flies here and outdoor survival of caterpillars is just about zero. ETA: Just looked up the tagging. Didn't know that was done at all. I don't think we'll be tagging.

I think most of the tagging is done in the Midwest part of the U.S. I usually just raise and tag the ones that will be heading down to Mexico for the winter. I also bring them inside to help the survival rate. Its a lot of work collecting all the milkweed for them!
