Is it better to use grit or ball bearings to polish stones I have just got a tumbler and it came with some small bearings so I am wordering if i should still use grit or just those? any advice appreiciated. Thanks Paul

Any metal mixed with the stone in a tumbling batch will generally get ground off by the stone and pretty much indelibly deposited on the surface of the stone. In other words, don't do it!. Steel shot can come in handy for impact hardening and polishing of softer metals though, if you wire wrap or fabricate silver it may be good to hang on to your bearings. jamesp please correct me if I'm off base here.
