I know this is a long-shot but I'm all coffee'd up this morning and wondering if any of our members from the general Georgia regions would have any advice for me regarding buying carpet direct from a mill or near-wholesale, distributor, etc.
We are starting a light renovation on our house in Napa in advance of moving there early next year. I have carpet laying experience and I want to install this myself in the four bedroom upstairs areas - with enough left over to do a little area downstairs at a later date. Around 1000 sq. feet. total. We want to buy a large roll of carpet and do the installation a room at a time as we get the patching and painting done.
From early research I know that a decent medium grade carpet at Home Depot will cost in the $2.50-3/sq.ft with "free installation." Installation is NOT free of course, but by saying free they make it impossible to walk the installation cost out of it. Even the low grade "rental house" carpet off the roll tender in the store has installation cost factored in at $1.35 to 1.75 per sq.ft.
By going direct I know that $0.55 to $1.00/sq.ft is not unrealistic for a decent carpet if I do it right. Factor in ground freight at an estimated $100 (per some dealer websites) and we are way ahead.
The pitfalls are many and it does take a lot of work to pull off - I also know that a lot of the carpet distributors in that area deal in 'seconds' and I don't mind that as long as it's not like a major color streak issue or something. We're not picky on style or color - plush in medium gray/beige earth tones. Compared to the worn out 'fawn' carpet that was installed when the house was built in 2002, anything is an upgrade.
So, does anyone have experience with this that they can impart to me? Any prior dealings along these lines, websites, businesses that you trust and recommend?
jamesp, fantastic5, melhill1659, sophia13, orrum - who else? these are all I can think of.
