Visited my local counter manufacturer. Perfect day to do this. Slight breeze, cool temps and a beautiful dark blue sky. Was on a mission to find scraps suitable for displaying jewelry and rocks. I was not disappointed. Below are the results for 15 minutes. This is about ¾ of the pile. They have a grinder now, so pile was not as high as usual, but a lot longer. About 2/3 of the pile was Quartz and man made. 1 What I brought home, minus 4 pieces and the ones on the second layer. 2 3 4 5 This one has to be my favorite. The large layers of mica and the huge hunks of quartz in various colors are stunning. I would never have a counter from something like this, but it will be perfect as a display piece. Envision setting something dark on top of it. Have a couple more pieces of this. 6 7

Looks like a productive 15 minutes! Yeah, I wouldn't think mica would hold up for a counter (though some folks change their counters after several years, and it might have been intended for walls or something else that doesn't get a lot of wear). If not used for cabs, tumbling or carving, those polished squares and rectangles can make fantastic bases for bigger mineral specimens, sculptures and even lamps. I'd even be tempted to use a tile saw and piece together a tabletop or chess board. I use one with a couple feet of chain to keep people from "stealing" the pen next to my refrigerator

I love going there. Usually spend some time checking out the latest counter slabs. Today there was a large slab that reminded me of crazy lace. Lots of cream, tan, rust and dark browns with maroon highlights. Dunno if would make a good counter, but it was beautiful. Some of the agate bands were about 6" wide. Now, that's an agate!
