Looks like it from the rough side, sort of, but the face looks odd, maybe because of the straight on cut...
Since it's not polished, it's hard to tell if there is a cellular structure, even with a loupe. There might be, but it could just be porous.

polish it up and show us a closeup macro photo. from what I can see I would say not wood.

Unfortunately, it's going to be a while before I'm up and running again. And even then, I don't have a flat lap. I just hope it works up to something interesting. The person I bought the collection from (or rather, his dad) must've loved collecting whatever it is. I seem to have at least three or four good-sized hunks of it.

my thought is not-wood. almost looks sedimentary, but I am not sure I've seen it before

That makes sense. Sedimentary, then silicified, maybe. It's got the density (by feel, not scientifically determined) similar to jasper.
