Here in Atlanta going to the "GW" is not like rock hounding, it is literal rock hounding. I've found a dozen spheres of all sizes, rough gems (mostly amethyst), finished gems in settings, hardness picks, and my last great piece was a very large cut and polished half-slab of coprolite. And I don't even wear my Indiana Jones hat into the store. Score.

It wouldn't be so bad but they put the ugliest dang rocks on there. I need to get them off somehow

Ever since they started their online auctions most of the good stuff goes to that

Great find. Most likely they used hot glue to put the rocks on. So you may be able to remove them with gentle heat. Or rubbing alcohol leaves no trace. Highly soluble.

You may have already said this but how do you know it's a John Perry (whoever that is haha). Reason I'm asking is my dad left behind a similar thing with the brass dolphin. We all hate it and can't wait to throw it away but if it's worth something then we might like it a little bit more lol John Perry always has a stamp/plate (not sure that is the right word) on it Mostly they were done in a type of resin he created, but some were done brass. They are almost always mounted on Manzanita I've always wanted one so I am not in a hurry to let it go This piece is mounted in tumbled grapevine. Not manzanita. Tumbled grapevine is common in the pet trade and I bought literal tons of it. That is what this is. Manzanita has narrow red to brick colored stems.

Beg to differ. While grape root /vine is similar in appearance, I have not seen it so large. I Googled the guys name, his sculptures are mounted on Manzanita burls.

When I used to do glasswork, I would buy up mounting pieces at thrift stores and such whenever I could. I still have a few John Perry manzanita bases with the tags on them. I have made dolphin sculptures similar to the brass ones and mounted on a peg on manzanita. I never throw anything away- much to my own chagrin- so, I still have a box of those bases kicking around somewhere. Who knows, I may need them someday.

Here is a use I found for one of the manzanita pieces. You can see the tag.

That is a somewhat rare sculpture for him. The double, brass dolphins. Glad you were able to get the rocks off. Now for the gunk that held them on.

I had to drive past the local GW today. Something told me to stop in. My finds were not rock related, as everything in that category was way overpriced. Saw some dyed rock strands from Michaels for $2.99. Same ones are often $1.99 on sale. Some completed hematite necklaces for $6.99. A 4" piece of Amethyst crystal with broken points for $25.00. Nope! Did find the missing paper cutting pattern scissors I needed. Now have a set of 8. An unused make up brush set, which I need for my transformation for a non profits haunted house I am volunteering at. An unopened, large package of bandages. And some lead strips. They are intended for stained glass, but I have an idea on how to use them for something else. Had been wishing I still had mine from long ago. Total cost for everything was $6.00.
Discovered this location discontinued their tool and sports sections. Was hoping to find some needed tools/equipment.
