Cabbing is not my strong suit and I do not do it often enough to step up my game. For harder materials that are a pain to get scratch free I often take the easy route and cab them to the 280 soft wheel then send them to the lot-o. It really is a fool proof method for getting a scratch free shiny cab. The only sacrifice would be slightly rounding over the girdle. In the past I have gone back and cleaned up the girdles on the genie but for my groove wraps I do not even bother. Thanks for looking Chuck

They look good to me. Then again, I'm not a cabber and wouldn't know to look for the differences. Nonetheless, they still turned out great. I'm thinking the minimal girdle issue is really a non-issue for what you're doing. Nice work.

Those look absolutely fabulous to me, Chuck. I don't see much rounding on the girdles (maybe a wee bit) but I don't see it being detrimental, especially to silversmiths. It might hinder wrappers a bit, but I don't see much difference.
Those stones are phenomenal, btw. Can't even pick a favorite - I love them all!

Would you share your Lot O process after the 280 wheel by any chance?

Beautiful! I've had one of his lot-o cabs in the hand and I can say - they rival or are better than a lot of genie cabs. The girdle really isn't a problem.

I vib polish also but take my cabs to 600 and I purposely roll the top edge of the girdle. From what I've been told there are two camps when it comes to the girdle. The way I understand it is that wire wrappers prefer a crisp vertical girdle where the smithies like a slight taper. I try to keep the girdle fairly vertical for the wrapper and slightly rounded for the smith. Disclaimer! I don't do very much only half a dozen wraps and never done a smithing so I don't know if my theory even works. I need to send a couple out to a Wrapper and Smith to see what they think. Would anyone like to give it a try?

Wow! Seeing those cabs is probably going to get me into tumbling. That would allow me to expand the range of hardness and size that my Pixie can reasonably handle - thanks.
Regarding girdle profile, I do metalsmithing and prefer curving/rounded sides. It gives me flexibility in bezel height and always ensures a securely set stone.

I can wrap them either way. I wrapped the one I got from Chuck with the rounded girdle. What I don't like to wrap is a high dome with no girdle. I've done it, but I don't like it.

Thanks Tela The only issue I have had is when I use too many side wires. The top and bottom wires want to slide over the edge when that happens. The stones seem more slippery to me too with the rounded edges. When forming the side wire bundle against the stone it slides around more. Not impossible by no means. I made a post years ago where I went back and cleaned up the girdles after tumbling but those pictures got lost to photobucket. Chuck

Wow! Great polish. I just got a UV-10 and I'm going to try some cabs in it for the final polish.

Those look great. I tried vibe tumbling some cabs to get a better polish once but they cam out duller. Not sure what I did wrong.

Even if you have to go back to the arbor to restore the ideal girdle/edge, you will save time and increase production volume with the vibe polishing (dozens or hundreds at a time); you end up with polished backs, but lose in snob appeal for some folks.

On cabs that I go back and hand work the girdle I do not advertise those as tumbled. If I leave the girdle slightly rounded I list those as tumbled. Chuck
