My son has been out picken in the Soap Stone region and the Tooele County area of Utah recently, brought us home about 10lbs of various material.
Here's a couple of pic's of a few more interesting pieces that I'm thinking is "Wonderstone"..........Back in 2009 a member here (NDK-Nate) had tumbled some he picked up at a local pet shop. No pictures of the rough but the polished looked much like what I'm about to slice up.....:
The stones are very dense, somewhat silky texture to the smoother surfaces, does not scratch with a knife blade or against Quartz. The photo's do not represent the true colors very well......mostly grey, black, beige, mocha, tan and a couple of spots of green.
I'll post a better wet sample soon......
Thanks for the help..!
Just tested the outside surfaces with a 2:1 ratio Muriatic acid solution......it reacts very foamy, but the inner layers do not respond...?

Thanks James...........once I started slicing discovered the "bands" did not run entirely through the rock. Tapered off at about 3/4 through. Held together without much fracturing, but was only able to get two thin "slab" type cuts, so cubed most of it........It's hard material so it should tumble nicely.

Banded Chert? Very pretty, whatever it is.

Banded Chert? Very pretty, whatever it is. After doing some reading and photo searching, I think you're on it.......evidently there are varieties of "Wonderstone" that have been identified as Chert, particularly in the areas my boy found this stuff. It certainly qualifies by it's hardness, layered structure, reaction to acid, slick surface and color pattern.
Seems it can be polished via tumble or cab routines.......I've never worked with it before, so we'll see how it goes. It won't be the first "un-popular" tumble material I've worked with, so maybe my previous experiences will come in handy.....lol
Thanks for the ID confirmation.......!

Chert is great, but has a bad rap by some. You made my day by confirming my thoughts.
