Some just don't understand. But what can you do.. hey folks. I've been poking around here seeing what you all get into. I've been taking an interest in diy equipment for some time now. I haven't built anything yet, but it's coming. I had posted some questions about building a cab machine. When I'll get around to building it, who knows. I'm also collecting parts for a flat lap build. This will be finished in the early spring. This really a great hobby. My father dabbled in jewelry making. I remember as a kid going down in the basement and going through all my dad's stuff and not knowing what anything was. I used to wonder what was so great about all those rocks. My dad took me to the beach and we found rocks and threw them in a tumbler and I almost immediately lost interest. It wasn't until almost 30 years later that my father passed. I received a little bit of his collection and so I started looking around, tumbling real specimens and not just beach rocks. I was immediately hooked. now I actually have a guy that supplies me with rocks. My wife isn't quite into it but it keeps me out of trouble. It's alittle frustrating that this is or can be such an expensive endeavor, so alot of my grand plans end up on a back burner. So anyway... That's alittle about me. Looking forward to talking shop. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum, from Northern Arizona! At least you're with a bunch of people who have the same disease.

Welcome, northerner78, to RTH, from Phoenix, Arizona.
Yep, it may be "But its just a rock" however it's a great feeling when you hold in the palm of your hand something that's between 65-250 million years old and you can get to change its appearance somewhat by sanding, tumbling, slicing, lapping, drilling or whatever it is you plan on doing to it and then you realize when you look at your finished creation, WOW, this won't burn, fade, rot or turn into dust and in fact........are you ready....... it will last for an eternity............ and that being the case, you are walking with giants.
Cheers, johnw

I used to be the same about "just a rock." But after getting into this as a hobby and seeing the things on here (not to mention the helpful people on this site), it became apparent that I was hooked. My grandfather was a professor in Geology and of course I had no interest when I was younger and he was alive. Sure could use his experience and knowledge now...

Welcome from VA. Sounds like you got a rocky start- but it kept on rolling and here you are. Don't worry, we all get it.... and yes, it can get pricey, but you can start out on a budget, too.

Welcome from Michigan. Lots of knowledge on this site. If you are able, join a local club to get in touch with others in your area who share this odd obsession.
