Has anyone used carbide tipped chisels to prospect? Are they worth the price when trying to break stone like green lizard rhyolite?
Thanks

I use standard steel chisels sold at The Home Depot. Never had a stone complain yet.

I picked up some railroad spikes by the train tracks. Working great for busting up the chalcedony. Thinking about taking them to the grinder to sharpen them up a little.

I spent my working years largely as a machinist so carbide is a fairly common material to me. I would not recommend using a carbide tipped chisel on rock because of the brittleness of carbide. Good steel is hard to beat.

Good steel is hard to beat. I totally agree with this. While not speaking to chisels, I seem to remember in my former line of work that carbide tipped chainsaw blades were more brittle that common steel blades. I'd simply assume that would be the case with chisels, as well.

Ain’t that brittle.
Ever use a Hilti hammer drill?

Hilti's have a thick carbide cutting tip inserted into a slot in a steel shank, lots of support for a fairly thick piece of carbide vs. a near sharp chisel tip.

As a brick/block/stone mason, I had carbide tips put on a few of my brick hammers. Never had one shatter and saved a lot of dressing/sharpening. Never tried a carbide tipped chisel, though.
