I've been using and re-using the same pound of green dop wax for maybe 10 years now. It seems thicker and not as smooth flowing as it once was. Kinda like me. LOL! Is it possible to thin it somehow? I really hate to buy new, as I'm not sure how much longer I'll be needing it. Any suggestion? If this is in the wrong forum, please feel free to move it.

I use mine for a long time, too. I generally just add a little new to the old. Works well to freshen up the old stuff.

You can add Laq to recondition the sticky factor Did you mean shellac instead of laq? Larry C. I meant Lac which is the resin from the lac beetle. But, yes, it seems I would communicate better if I used the term shellac. the source I found is here www.shellac.net/information.htmlthey used to market it under the name “Lac “.

Dopping wax does go off after a long time, seems to lose the ability to melt and instead sort of bubbles and burns without flowing. I have attempted to recondition it by adding, beeswax, shellac, parrafin (surfboard) wax, various solvents, but it just seems to make it worse if anything. You end up with everything seperating and a sticky glob of ex dopping wax and a puddle of whatever you added. I will be interested to see if anyone else has been succesful.

Dpo wax is not that expensive. Get some new stuff but don't mix it with the old stuff. The dop pot is what makes the wax get old. It just sits there cooking the volatile off. Turn the dop on make up a few dop sticks with globs of wax on them and then turn the dop pot off. I use an alcohol lamp to heat my cabs and the dop on the sticks. Bob
