Doing an informal survey. I recently finished tumbling some Turitella shells. I wanted to keep the shape intact. A few months ago I was given some highly polished/tumbled Turitella shells. Before deciding how to tumble the better Turitellas I have, am asking the members here what their preference is. The top photo are the ones I tumbled. The bottom one are those I was given. Sorry, but the photos are not to scale. The ones I did are up to 1" long. The ones I was given are up to 5/8" long. Which do you prefer? Thank you.

I personally like the smaller ones in the bottom photo. Color and shape are more pleasing to me. No offense, but the ones in the top picture look like pupae to me.

I prefer the bottom ones because of the color contrast.

I like the bottom ones also. The top ones look like... welll... no offense... 🐶💩. LOL. Sorry! They are nice, just they don’t look right to me.

Hello fernwood. I think I may have answered this before, but, the bottom ones are more pleasing to the eye. The ones on top look more like dog-doo. Sorry for saying that, but it's the "what do you see in a stone" training that caused me to say that. Forgive me for being candid. Cheers, johnw

I would say the bottom ones. Now that's just the type of answer I would expect from an HVAC cohort. Politically correct, but full of innuendo. Cheers, johnw

Thanks everyone. When my 1 lb barrel is available again, will start a batch in coarse.

Well, the bottom ones look as I expect turitella to look. However, for collecting purposes, I prefer the top ones, as they seem much more real, organic, and interesting to me. Even though they look like larvae.

Even though they look like larvae. Exactly. I wanted them to look like shells/snails. Have enough good ones to run both ways and see what happens. The bottom ones pictured had a lot more matrix than the ones I have. Thinking that if I just run them in course and remove the structure, they will look like pointed, rust colored blobs. There is almost no host rock in the rest of these. Most have very sharp points. That has been my struggle, as these are excellent, mostly pure examples. Do I spend the 1.5 months possibly destroying them or do I spend a month polishing only and not removing the structure?

I would say it depends on what you want them for after polishing. If you want to sell them, you would probably have more takers for the bottom-style ones. They are pretty. If you want to create something uncommon, go for the look of the top ones. They won't have widespread appeal, but some weirdos like me will think they are cool.

Want to use them for pendants/earrings that would be sold. Some as give aways for children.
