Since I can't seem to find the heart I lost I decided to start another cab with my dremel. Can't just sit around doing nothing! Anyway, this is the slab. I drew a line, took it down to the tile saw...and it fractured. I was going to use the piece on the left (obviously) and it basically split right in half. So I turned the bigger piece and started trimming it and ended up with this. I guess the rock told me what to do. And then grinded on it for about a half hour, resulting in this so far. Wish me luck, and thanks for looking!

Good luck, hope you get an awesome cab out of it. Rocks usually win when telling a lapidary what to do ;-)

Sorry about the heart.... and you were almost there, too.

Sorry about the heart.... and you were almost there, too. Thanks, but I'm sure it will turn up somewhere. Maybe it's laying in the street in front of work or my house, covered in snow. I'll find it in May

Oh, I'm looking forward to March also. But two years ago (I think) I remember we had a huge blizzard here on Mother's Day.

I never attempeted to try and carve a heart with a dremel intererting I would find heart shape rocks just small rhyolite gravel type and use my variable speed bench grinder w/ S/C carbide wheel to touch up the profile then I sprayed them with shellac or something similar to bring out the colors put some sticky on the back and handed out to computer clients and such anyway that really how I started the hobby w/ limited space and resources kept me busy What the heck Here 2 of my original That gotta be over 10 years ago Lot heart done since then

But I'm not giving up on making another one- or finding the one I lost. manofglass sent me the cab I really need to find it and finish it. I have some other slabs I could use... And I have learned that I have way more respect for those who make hearts. Not sure if they're as difficult on a cabber as they are on a dremel but I think they still take talent.

I see what you mean, drocknut , I ground some more at lunch and some dang pits appeared It appears that the rock is indeed the boss. Now I need to decide if I want to live with pits or keep going. Pretty sure I'll keep going. Here's what I'm talking about:

It is looking great, even with the pits.

The pits could always be filled in. I personally like cabs with some crystal vugs in them.

Crap. Tried to get rid of some of the pits in this and I was rewarded for my efforts by a bigger problem. Soft spots. I'm not known for knowing when to quit- even if this ends up ring-sized I will win. Hopefully.
