Hope everyone had a good winter and is ready to play with rocks! I found a rock the other day while looking for mushrooms and it has a smooth waxy finish like agate so I went back today and took a couple pics in the rain when it was wet. Could it be some kind of agate or a huge piece of flint. Over my head so it's up to all you real smart people to please shed some light on this rock for me. Thanks in advance! Jeff

Oops, just noticed there is a forum to help with identification, if this needs to be posted over there instead just yell at me and I will move it.

My cousin sent me some pics of some arrowheads from this area and they look the same so I am guessing chert quartz like they made arrowheads out of.

Could be quartzite. Some ancient points from Indiana have been quartzite.

Flipper If the latter images are from the first rock image then You are correct Quartzite. The sugar texture gives it away. If not for that I would have said Quartz as well. Don't you just love a fresh fracture for diagnosis.

I read where quartzite is harder than quartz, so will it tumble and shine up well?

Quartzite will tumble and take a good polish. Sometimes it is vuggy and that can hurt the polish but there is a lot that is real solid. Not sure why it would be or could be harder than quartz since it is made of quartz. However it is tougher than quartz when hitting with a hammer. For tumbling with a 6# drum or larger I would tumble with quartz but not agate. Agate is much tougher and can ping the edges of quartzite In larger diameter tumblers so when you get it out of the tumbler the edges are frosted. I have seen this on Quartzite and Quartz when tumbled with agates. On smaller tumblers like the Lortone 3A it does not matter if they are mixed.
