So colorful! I remember when I was little and thought crackle quartz was natural. Was amazed by them. Cpl summers ago, while on vacation, we were picking up souvenirs for some ppl and they had decent little selection of polished rocks. daughter just had to get cpl crackle ones for herself.. this summer we were in arkansas and went to a quartz mine to dig for a bit. So ended up with a bucket full of mostly broken clear and milky quartz pcs taking up space. Didnt really know what were gonna do with all the junk pcs but your posts reminded me that, from what I've read, its not too difficult a diy project. Would be perfect way to utilize some of our material and be big hit with daughter and her friends, especially if made ourselves. Thanks for the pics and the inspiration!

It would be intresting to see how that is done Fairly easy, done similar to crackling glass marbles: Heating for more than a couple of minutes would be better. Finish by soaking in a permanent aniline dye (the type used to dye fabric will do). Some folks put the dye into the quenching water. A note regarding the video: you'll want to use eye protection throughout as natural crystals (and even glass) can launch shards in all directions when rapidly heating or cooling.

This post had me thinking about the cracked marbles, lol. May be dating myself, but I remember doing those back in the early 1970s.
