If someone can put a name to this I would really appreciate itl. Looks like mica, layered like mica and has a similar hardness of around three but the gold color is more golden than gold. It does not crumble like fools gold and when I mash a tiny piece on paper with a knife it will smear like hard butter and leave a gold streak. Semi translucent but doesn't taste like candy. The last photo has the best color but it does have some slightly red areas but cant tell if it is natural or something else adding the red. Thanks in advance for any input and hello everyone. Still rockin but slower. Jim

The last photo reminds me of yellow feldspar. Don't think that is it, though.

I know nothing about rocks, but am trying to learn. With that said, the last pic looks like pyrite to me.

Google images says, "BINGO!" I never even heard of it. Not something I want to mess with. Be careful, Jim.

Smears like hard butter? From what Beth said I don't think I will be putting any on my Toast or Bagel in the morning. Good to meet ya Jim.

This stuff makes beautiful mineral specimens. We'd never seen any in person when we bought the chunk we have.
The clown selling it said it was a rare kind of jasper, and might even have real gold in it. They either really didn't know what it was, or they were just trying to unload it on anyone who might buy it. We brought it home and sealed it up in a thick plastic bag.

Thank you all for the well wishes and especially for the ID. It is good when things like this happen because the knowledge may save a licker some grief some day.
Except for a few bad days the weather has been pretty mild so I spent an entire afternoon polishing rocks in my shop. Probably the first time in over a year and it felt pretty good. I am right at the end of my enthusiasm for dream catchers so maybe it is time to work a little rock again.
What really baffles me is how in the hell I ended up being seventy three with a five year old great grandson. Somebody had to have slipped a few of their years into my count. Jim

Always good to hear from you, Jim.
Know what you mean about the "time-warp" syndrome. I remember meeting you briefly at the RTH get-together in Quartzsite once, but it doesn't seem possible that it was ten years ago... .
Sounds like it really might be time for workin' up some more stones.
Funny that you mentioned that. I just got drawn back to cutting an opal for the first time in a good while. Had this piece of rough for at least ten years, and it started to pop into my head recently. Staying away from cutting for a while makes it a lot more fun when you do get called back to it.
