I've stumbled across some material that I quite like, but have not nailed down what it is. Someone suggested it's mica, though I'm not convinced. I've found plenty of mica books around here, muscovite and biotite, and... if this is that, it must be some metamorphosed something or other because nope. This stuff actually grinds okay. It is soft and I've not had a whole lot of luck with polish. I tossed a few into dry polish (foreground) and there's a little bit of a sheen, so that's neat. The two propped up in the background have only been rough ground and came from a different area. They're quite a bit more sparkly, with bigger plates in them. Closeup of the smaller of the two in the rear of the prior picture trying to showoff the sparkly plates. If anyone has an idea what this is, I'm all ears, till then I'll keep calling it sparkly black rock. It's quite the hit with friends and family.

Gabbro perhaps? Looks similar to me.

Gabbro perhaps? Looks similar to me. It sure looks like gabbro/gneiss/remelted granite with random crystalline alignments of mica in quartz or possibly in the felspar. Sure would be cool to see a polished version. Cool stuff Benathema. Granite is a tough bird to tumble polish but gabbro and certainly gneiss often takes a tumble polish.

Gneiss, yes it is.... I collect a lot of that material when we visit the high elevations of Montana... Tumbles great!

We have that here also. Good to know that it is gneiss.
