I went to a very small show today hoping to find some nice rough and slabs, but there was nothing good and I thought I'd go home empty-handed. That is, until I spied this very well-cut, 40x30 beauty for only $12. I'm embarrassed to say that the seller told me what the agate is, but my brain seems to have filed it in the usual "You went to the store and forgot to pick up what I told you we needed??!!" black hole. The lighter banding in the top half is translucent.

Banded carnelian, maybe? Really, I have no glue clue and it's just a guess.

Looks like a variety of onyx to me.

Hmmmm... new to me. I didn’t know carnelian came in bands. Looks like glass! Thanks.

The seller did refer to it as carnelian, but I can also see that it may well be sardonyx. Thanks!

Sardonyx was what my brain was looking for last night and couldn't find.
Happens after looking at the MLS for hours. I go brain dead.
It could be either - they are so similar.
