A good drop saw is hard to beat. Simple design - less to go wrong. The 18" would let you use a segmented rim blade, too. A bonus in my book.

The entire rock shop has been listed for probably 6 months now.

Like mentioned above just be diligent about checking facebook and craigslist. Lapidary does not pop up very often in my area but when it does I am one of the first to call on it. 12" lortone saw last year for $250, 14" beacon star 7 years ago for $450 and came with an awesome 8" trim saw, 18" bought a couple weeks ago for $650 and came with a whole binch of other great stuff. All of the saws were ready to cut when purchased. Edit: Short term memory loss. I only paid $550 for the 18". forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/90128/new-toy-shop-todayChuck

On that point, what is the purpose behind more than 1 slab saw? I suppose you can get them all going at once that way.

On that point, what is the purpose behind more than 1 slab saw? I suppose you can get them all going at once that way. The larger the saw the thicker the kerf on the blade. Cutting a 3" tall rock on an 18" saw wastes more material then cutting it on a 10" saw. The larger saws also use more electricity then the smaller ones. Right now I've got a 6", 8" 10", 12", 14" and 18". If I were smart I would sell the 14" and keep the 12" and 18" but that 14" saw is hands down my favorite saw. Easiest slab saw ever made for cleaning and built like a tank. Chuck

Having more than one slab saw - especially a range of sizes like Chuck has - is really good. Even if you aren't running more than one at a time it's great to have one running while doing a cleanout on another one. Makes cleanouts seem like less of an inconvenience for me.
We have a 4", two 6"s, three 10"s, 14" (drop saw), and 18" saws. The three 10"s are each set up for specific tasks. One is a 70 year old antique ($50), one we got recently for $80, but the third is a really nice refurb from Cigar Box Rock. It cost almost as much as all our other saws and is reserved for higher quality rough.

Friends of ours might still have two 6" saws for sale, but we're in Arizona.
Tony ( catmandewe ) would probably be happy to ship you whatever size you want. He might still be in Quartzsite.
From your avatar photo, though, I suspect you are resourceful enough to find whatever you want. But I do know how little interest there was in lapidary pursuits in that part of the country. I'm originally from Virginia, and there are more lapidaries in our county here than there might have been in the whole state there. Rocks and equipment are much easier to find out here.

Good stuff pops up now and again, but not often here. I need to ask around the rock club and see if anyone wants to part with any equipment. I’d like a cab machine a trim saw and a slab saw. I’ve got a little gryphon band saw, but it cuts pretty slowly.
