Anyone else ever have a cleanout where you open the barrel, and it smells absolutely horrible? I'd say 1/10 of the time, I get one. I don't know why it would be different, but occasionally it is.

Might be from whatever you've been tumbling. Some stones contain sulfur compounds that can be smelly.

every so often i get an unpleasant odor, it isn't sulfurous. it smells more like a petroleum product, like a bad oil or something. it is really hard to describe.

That's probably the same thing I'm getting. Definitely not like Sulphur, but more like petroleum, almost an industrial kind of smell, but definitely hard to describe. I'm just tumbling agates and similar.

Yea I get something like that. Hard to pinpoint what the smell is like.

Build up of some type of oil used in processing the grit? Some nasty things like benzene (and including sulfur) are components of the smell of petroleum products and also of the breakdown of organics in rocks. Don't sniff too hard, though:

I get that once in a while as well. The closest smell I can compare it to is gear oil. I doubt it's the grit since I have had batches with and without the smell all coming from the same bag of grit. It must just be something in the rock.

Top 10 rocks that stink: listverse.com/2017/04/10/10-rocks-that-stink/joshuamcduffieAs a part-time flint knapper, I know that there is a flint out there that emits an oily smell when chipped. Don't remember the name of it but I think it may come from Kentucky. Any of the rock you put in the tumbler have oil on it from cutting?

Shouldn’t have any oil, RickB. It’s possible though. It’s just odd that it only happens intermittently. Like one cleanout yes, another, no.

Rocks collected in rivers often smell bad joshuamcduffie. Organic compounds are known for generating smells. Gravel roads too, where they spray the road heavily with waste oils to keep dust down. Used cooking oils like vegetable oil. Savannah River chert can absorb a lot of moisture. Ever notice how long it takes for Savannah chert to dry out. Even when slightly damp the colors are much richer. Step 1 in the rotary is usually the worst.

Nice, now I can blame it on the tumbler. I thought the norm was to blame it on the dog!

Guaranteed to smell like used oil if you tumble any shale at all .
