Love your cat. Do you know if the rock is metallic? How hard is it?

Love your cat. Do you know if the rock is metallic? How hard is it? I don't know how to tell if it is metallic. Any advice? It is very hard and dense. Agate-like hard. Looks and feels like a Lake Superior agate, but the color / luster is not like any agate I have seen.

Maybe some worn pyrite or chalcopyrite? Not sure what you want to do with it (nor not do with it), but I can think of a number of things to try that may or may not have scientific significance ...like chipping a piece off, or throwing it in the saw, or put a drop of acid on it and look for a reaction, seeing if it's magnetic, or even a scratch test to try and determine hardness. I'm sure there are knowledgeable folks here that can help that won't take my uneducated "scorched earth" approach to mineral identification. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone has to say about it, I'm as curious as your cat seemed to be (if only for a moment or two).

I'll also throw in my hat as suspecting pyrite (in which case, it is going to be weakly or non-magnetic). Looks very much like some of the pyrite concretions I've found in the past. If you are going to cut it, sulfides give off a sulfur (egg) smell. Second the 'like' on the cute, rock-loving kitty!

Might try a metal detector to see if it's metallic.

A couple easy DIY tests you could do to help with the ID.
A streak test, take your toilet lid off and flip it over, scrape the rock against the rough porcelain material and note the color of the mark left if any. Pyrite will leave a dark greenish black streak.
Second, try scratching the rock with a pushpin or knife blade, if a scratch mark is left it is not quartz (agate is quartz) and is likely not pyrite unless the surface area is softer from weathering. If no scratch mark is left try scratching it with a piece of known quartz and note the result.
Like noted above, chipping off a piece and posting a close up photo would be very helpful.

I spotted a similar one in a historic BC gold creek. I was hoping for gold, but no such luck. I got completely soaked in freezing water trying to retrieve it. Good from far and far from good. Then I also wondered about meteorite, because it kinda looked molten, but was not magnetic and my metal detector didn't detect it. I put it on a shelf for a number of years and it got dull and brown. Now that I know more, it is a pyrite nodule.
