Looking good! Did you tumble polish that in a rotary tumbler for the entire duration or use a vibratory at all?

Hi,
I just bought a used QT66 tumbler. It came with about four pounds of colored slag glass that needs to be tumbled. It looked like it was in rockshed bags. Sizes, 2 to 4 inches. She was very sweet and gave me a great deal and I told her I would tumble the glass first. It is very nice and great colors but I really just want to tumble rocks. I am not set up to post pictures in the forum yet but PM me if interested and I can text you pictures and send it along to you.

lancemountain they look really good. What was your recipe and tumble times? Was it in a rotary? I'm just starting my first batch of broken glass bottles for fun and trying to figure out the optimal tumble times. I read that skipping the 60/90 coarse stage and going directly to medium grit works well. Thanks.

I had good success doing glass last summer, except that I got a shard of it in my pinky finger. The shard is out, but I can't feel the tip of the finger anymore.

Timely post for me. I have found an abandoned power line with green and clear insulators. However, most are broken or chipped (probably shot). I was thinking it would be fun to tumble some of this old glass. One question: is broken/sharp glass destructive to the rotary tumbler barrel?

One question: is broken/sharp glass destructive to the rotary tumbler barrel? I've had glass cut through the lid liner on the barrel. I've also had small pieces of glass get wedged in the lip edge of the top of the barrels on my QT12's and slowly push the top of the barrels open with force until they leak. I've never had it actually damage the barrel itself...even with some of the Leland Blue slag I've tumbled that has small metal splinters embedded in it...

After I did several long runs of glass I had to replace the Lid Liners on my Lortone 6 Pound barrels

Go look for art glass vases and plates you can break up at the Goodwill or Salvation Army stores.

Is thicker glass (like from the bottom of a bottle) better for tumbling or doesn't it matter?
I know an early 1900's dump up north where somebody broke a couple hundred bottles on a rock. I suspect they smashed any that they dug up that were chipped or melted. I guess it could also be a place where somebody wasted a pile of bullets. Either way, I could probably collect a 5 gallon bucket of coloured and clear glass in a few minutes with a shovel.

Home Depot sells 1 gallon paint cans. Should fit on most tumbler machines. Run it 60-70% full with water up to glass, no abrasives for hours or a day. Say good bye to sharp edges.

One warning about tumbling glass. It can pressurize sealed barrels causing the lid to pop open. Keep an eye on them by watching for any bulging. You may need to burp the barrel on occasion.

Either way, I could probably collect a 5 gallon bucket of coloured and clear glass in a few minutes with a shovel. I had good luck with the thicker stuff. The thinner pieces I used (sides of a thrift-store vase) got very thin, and the larger ones would probably have cracked if I'd kept them in a rotary. Don't forget glass is pretty soft compared to what we normally tumble, so it loses mass/size more quickly.

I started tumbling glass by breaking up a couple of large Beer Mugs and rolling that.

I started tumbling glass by breaking up a couple of large Beer Mugs and rolling that. I have been known to break a few beer mugs, roll and tumble myself. If it happens tonight, it might just be considered intentional. Oh wait, I want some paint cans to save my barrels. However, the beers are still not safe.
