Hi, I'm Cam and I live in Boise, Idaho. I'm fairly new to rockhounding, but I'm already obsessed and my favorite thing to do is surface hunting Graveyard Point OR with one of my two daughters in the backpack. I enjoy tumbling and cutting rocks with my tile saw, but eventually I hope to join a local club so I can cut some of the monsters my tools are useless against! I'd love to find some other people from Idaho or eastern Oregon, but I'm excited to talk to people from all over the world as well! I hope these work - I tried to snag some photos from my instagram of recent finds: Agate slice with tiny red plumes! The best agate I've found in city limits:Large Botryoidal Chalcedony Nodule:Local plume agate from inside the city limits - blew my mind this exists and I haven't been able to find any references to it online! Orange botryoidal chalcedony from graveyard point oregonSome slabs I cut last night, plume agate and a piece of petrified woodNice to meet you! Cam

Welcome to the group from a native Idahoan and former Boisean. I'm now in Southern California but will be moving soon to Arizona. You live in a collector's paradise. Join the local club and get to know the collecting areas - there are many besides GYP. Lots to learn here from people who are generous with their help.

Cam, welcome to the forum from South Dakota! Thanks for sharing the pics of your finds! For those of us who won't likely get to other places to hound, it's fun to live vicariously through the posts of others!

You said, "I'm fairly new to rockhounding, but I'm already obsessed and my favorite thing to do is surface hunting Graveyard Point OR with one of my two daughters in the backpack." I don't know how big your daughter in the back pack is but if you kick her out you can probably carry at least 20 more pounds of rock back:)

rmf - very true, 25-40 extra pounds depending on if its the 3 or 1 year old! It's good though, forces me to be a little more selective (a LITTLE).

gemfeller - hoping to join the club once this covid situation is calmer, looking forward to meeting local folks for sure. and you can still tell me all your favorite spots around here even though you don't live here anymore :-) Arizona should be a great place to hound once you are there!

It's been so long since I hunted in Idaho I doubt any of my old favorites are the same. GYP and Malheur County, OR are great places to prospect and I've recently seen some really beautiful material coming out of central ID in Lemhi County. I don't know if Beacon Hill is still producing its beautiful nodules but it was a good spot for me years ago. So was Succor Creek. I'd recommend getting one of the collecting books on ID. While the easy stuff will be long gone it will point you to areas that have produced good rock in the past. With some determination and shoe leather, new prospecting those areas could result in good finds. Also, get in touch with Tony (Catmandewe) who post here. He's in Gooding, an easy drive from Boise, and I'm sure he'll share some great collecting spots. He also has a huge stash of lapidary rough you'll want to check out. Happy Trails!

I got the Gem Trails of Idaho book and it has hooked me up big time at Succor Creek and GYP. Led me to a great egg bed away from the main digging in Succor Creek, and it really helps for exploring GP, I've been to 4 different places within it, what a huge area! I'll research the options you mentioned, thank you! And I'll try to track Tony down too.

Unsure when he'll be heading back up. Could all depend on how business is at the show.

Welcome from AZ, formerly from WA state and collected GYP and succor creek many times. The Boise club is definitely a good one. I hope to be back up there around June before or after the prineville show.
