Some back story: I had a 2004 red Monte Carlo SS for many years and loved it. What a great car! Finally, the body rotted out and wouldn't pass VT inspection. 150 K on the odometer and still running strong. I bought a 2001 black MOC SS with only 75 K and had it restored. It had never been in the salt until this past October snowstorm, and I said, "I can't do this to this car." So I bought a winter car. Couldn't go where I wanted to get one because of COVID and got one locally, a 2004 VW Passat with 116 K. The body is solid.
What a mistake! It has been one thing after the other. Apparently one of the previous owners did not take care of it. I won't go through the whole list. My mechanic says that everything has been monkeyed with, new thing wrong might be the turbo, might be the head gasket, and he doesn't think that would be the end of it. He says if it was his car he would put a whole new engine in it -- gave me a price of 2,000-2300 and that would include the new coils, plugs, etc that have already been put in. He says tranny is fine, brakes good etc. It handles really well and is great in snow and ice. The heater even works now. Might need new tires to pass inspection next year; they have great tread but are pretty badly weather checked.
In a perfect world, I'd push it off a cliff and buy a new SUV for winter months, but that is not an option. I hate car shopping!
Anybody faced a similar thing with VW? What did you decide and were you satisfied with the decision?
