How does everyone store and sort their rough? I was already a rockhound, but since I started tumbling my rock accumulation rate has increased A LOT. Most of my rocks are self collected and coated with clay; so I've been stacking them outside and letting the spring rains clean them for me. But now I have three piles of rocks in my backyard, which spiders love, and a poison ivy plant has decided rock piles are a great place to grow. SO, I'm just curious how everyone stores their rocks, whether they are self collected or bought!

Anything I purchased or of particular interest gets stored in my garage (anywhere/everywhere shelves, bins, buckets, piles, stacked on the floor). Anything I collected of low interest goes outside in piles, or buckets (holes in the bottom to avoid collecting water).

Now that's a massive rock collection, lordsorril ! Great tip about putting holes in buckets outside - at least poison ivy probably couldn't grow up through the holes!

Thanks, the two photos represent about 20% of my stored rough. My mailman says I am infamous at the post office. If poison ivy is growing up through your rock piles, then you need larger/taller rock piles

Is that just the discard pile, Garage Rocker? It looks like most of those have been cut at least once. We are a bunch of amateurs with just a single shelf set up in the basement for rocks. Tumbling material is sorted and stored in stackable plastic containers. Bigger rocks are piled up in a basket shelf, with boxes of similar rough on the bottom shelf. Supplies are kept on the top shelf and we have another shelf just displaying some of the prettier rocks.

This is my favorite hounding spot around here. It has been picked over quite a bit since these pics were taken. I don't even know what's left now, it's been a couple years since I've been. That, by the way, is every bit Kentucky agate. Pretty much have to cut it to see if it's worth anything, or a dud.

Black nursery tubs from landscaping projects are uv resistant; home depot buckets are not good for more than a year or two out of doors. I grabbed a few packages of thin copper tags meant for labeling landscape or garden plants. They don't rot like paper tags and are likely to stay in a tub of rocks once the locality or rock id is scratched in the soft tag surface. Otherwise my favorite rock storage furniture in the shop is a heavy metal file cabinet designed with the shallow double drawers for 3 x 5 library cards.

That is quite the rock hounding spot! Something tells me there is an interesting story behind that one.

I have some in boxes/bins on shelves in house. Some in boxes in corner of dining room. Some in plastic containers in a spare dresser. Some in boxes on shelves in enclosed porch. Some in coffee cans on porch shelves. Some in 5 gallon pails, with lids, on covered patio. Labeled with permanent marker. Some on long step leading from house to patio. Some around edges of patio.
Rocks, rocks everywhere, lol.

After the rock enthusiast in me gets past the impressive pile of rocks you've stashed away there, I wonder...you got some skeletons in that closet garage, or something? I'm curious about the top of that picture.

We have "boxes" outside made of RR ties on long side and 4 foot treated 6x6's on the ends with metal siding setting on ABS pipe in the box. Things don't sink into the ground that way. Things are pretty well organized within the boxes, 3 of them. Special stuff goes in purpose built wood boxes under the work bench in our little rock shop room.
