can anyone confirm that the darker bands in this rock is some sort of quartz? I am pretty sure it's granite with quartz mixed in, but I don't have much experience ID'ing types of rock yet. The bands are dark grey and semi-translucent (the photos don't show it that well). The light part (granite) did not shine (as expected), but the dark bands got a very nice shine. I am incuding before and after shots.

Looks metallic. Maybe hematite? Thanks, the photo makes it look metallic, but when I look at it up close with my magnifier it doesn't have a metallic look. I wish I had the equipment to take magnifier photos :-)

uts intersesting have you tried to scrth mohs
any needle/pin will do as initial test if flakes well... I don't know might be plagio mica....

Yes Quartz. I did not think granite but the close ups say fine grained granite. Isn't that gniess?
