Some of you knew that I was going to have a total hip replacement. Most did not. Well, it is over and done. I am sore as hell and wish I could be somewhere warm instead of being stuck in the cold in MN.
In Sept of 2018 we were in the chow hall supervising lunch when one of the inmates decided to start trouble with another guy. One of our ladies told him to knock it off and to go find a seat. He took exception to a woman telling him what to do so he threatened her with violence. She hit the button and we responded as a whole. He refused to go to the ground so she and another one of our ladies deployed chemical irritant. He didn't like it so he punched her in the face. We pig-piled him and after a while he went down. Unfortunately I was on the bottom of the pile when we ended up on the floor. It damaged the cartilage in my hip and apparently damaged to cup as well. I ended up with surgery to replace the cartilage and remove the chunks of my socket that went down inside the joint and wreaked havoc with everything inside. This was a couple years ago.
That surgery didn't work and on Tuesday they did a total hip replacement on my right side. Everything went pretty smooth and I am doing OK now. I have a walker and am able to get around pretty well. In a couple weeks I will go to crutches. By then I will be feeling a whole lot better.
If you have questions, go ahead and ask. I am not afraid of any question.

Mark K Heal quickly and I hope the pain goes away soon.
My only advice is to keep moving and do whatever physical therapy they tell you to do religiously. Nothing is better than keeping everything moving, even if it hurts like hell at the moment.

If you were at the bottom of that pile I'm guessing that hip might have not been the only thing affected, and that it also probably wasn't your first pig pile. For arthritis like the osteoarthritis I deal with or bone and connecting tissue health, Gelatin has worked wonders for me. It literally gave me the use of my hands back. We get it by the 3# jar and I put a scoop in my morning coffee daily. And definitely the PT stretches and exercises.

Not my first or last pig pile.

Mark K - Sorry to hear about the injury...and sorry to hear the reason it occurred. Another case of mindless selfishness on the part of that inmate...one who has zero care for themselves or those around them. I do hope you heal quickly and completely. I'm sorry someone stole your health from you!

Called some friends and went to our rock club meeting tonight. Was nice to get out of the house. I am getting better every day. By the time I have my followup appointment on the 19th I should be ready to toss this walker in the scrap pile.

What a difference 24 hours makes. I used a cane to move some crap around a little while ago. It didn't hurt either. Now I can use my walker as a cane in the right hand and carry my milk with the left and not give any to the dogs by accident.

Update
I am walking around for the most part with no aids at all. When I go outside I generally take my walking stick with because it is slippery out in the snow. All in all I am kicking butt. I just need to build up some stamina. I am heading to TX tomorrow to spend a little over a week with friends. That should help with the recovery.

Mark K glad to see you are doing well. Texas is getting ready for some cold weather so I hope your friend lives in a warmer area.

Got back this afternoon. It was chilly. I was in Donna. Went to S. padre and did some metal detecting and opportunistic rock hounding. Nothing extremely good on either front. Did get the hell burned out of me.

Mark K - How in the world did you get the hell burned out of you if it was chilly?

I went to South Padre on the best day of the week and it got up to the low 70's. No hat, no sleeves, no SPF. Just me and the sand and the sun. And my detector. The only thing that is still burned is my head.
