Prior to getting my flat lap, I had reasonable fingernails that occasionally needed a trim. Since getting the lap they have all but disappeared. Each thumb has tiny little hole from grazing the disc. The rest of my fingers are nicked, healing from nicks, or just waiting to be nicked.
Couple of weeks ago, I was pressing a small slab on the plate and when I was ready to pull it off, I shuddered, thinking, "I'm gonna burn another finger." I saw a dissecting needle from one of my son's bio labs. I grabbed it with my free hand and gingerly poked it under the edge of the slab and lifted it a few mm's so that I could grab it without sacrificing a digit. Later that day I went online and bought a dental tool kit from amazon. (https://tinyurl.com/2p95xn6a).
My fingers are healing nicely and the tools actually come in pretty hand for occasionally picking out or scraping gunk from the crevices.

Here's a good hint: Ask your dentist to save you dental picks they are going to throw out. They go through them like crazy even though they are still sharper than hell. I got a whole slew of them in all shapes and sizes just by asking my dentist to save them for me. Didn't cost me a dime.

Each ring could come with a little tube of tooth paste!! Sort of gift-with-purchase!

LOL she actually grabbed my Exacto knife with a modified needle (ground down to needle point) to get those really tiny things.

Invest in some finger cots from amazon. They look ridiculous but your nails will thank you.

However, since you now have a full set of them now, maybe you could offer a discount teeth cleaning service for fellow rockhounds, hmmm?

When using a flat lap I start the lap with the stone on it, and stop it before taking the stone back off, just get the lap wet first.

I don't have an autoclave, so none of my picks are going in anyone's mouth.

I mentioned this to my step-daughter, who works for a large, multi-office dental practice. She told me that they are prohibited by law from giving them away. They bundle theirs up each week and send them to a metals processing company that (we presume) recycles the stainless steel in them. That said, she did snag a few for me on-the-sly.
