So I just started using my Lortone QT6 rock tumbler, and it has been running for 2 hours or so. I read it is normal for the motor to feel hot to the touch, but I can also feel a hot plastic-like smell (not overpowering, but noticable), and it made me wonder whether I might have overloaded it. Including water, rocks, and grit, it weighs pretty much exactly 6 lbs. (plus another 2 lbs for the barrel itself). Since it is a 6 lbs. tumbler it should be OK no?
So I guess my main question is: is it normal for the motor to smell a little like hot plastic when it is new? At what point should I have it looked at?

Are you sure it is a plastic smell? I am wondering if it could simply be the oil they lubed the bearings with or coated the metal to prevent rusting during transport heating up from the motor? Don't know where these are built, but most everything comes out of China these days and they cover metal parts with oil to prevent corrosion from ocean spray during transport. For instance, when I bought a metal lathe it was really coated with oil.

Thank you!
I am not sure to be honest. It is very possible that it is just something like that. I will let it run for a while longer and see if it starts shutting down or something. I think I read somewhere that the motor shuts down automatically if it is overheated. If it was electronic burning I guess the smell would be much stronger.
With any luck the smell will fade with time!
Thank you for your input, it made me feel a little more at ease about this whole thing.

Like Wooferhound said, you don't need to worry about overloading a QT6; the QT12 uses the same motor and is twice the size. I have a QT12 and the barrel can weigh around 25lbs when filled 3/4 full with rock, water, and grit. I'm honestly not sure why it is considered a 12 pound tumbler....

Break in smell of the new motor I’m guessing. Welcome to the board.

Thank you all for the replies. It has been running since yesterday without any issues, so I reckon it's fine. Looking forward to my first batch of finished stones in a month or so!

Looking forward to my first batch of finished stones in a month or so!That might give you just enough time to figure out how to post pictures on the forum so we can see them too! (Sometimes it takes awhile for people to figure out how to post pictures! LOL)
