Your friend is correct. Tripoli should be considered a prepolish.
Figure it is around 700 to 800 grit.
I personally like it, but I'm never in a hurry for a batch of rocks to be finished. Sometimes I have mixed it with 500 grit and other times I have used it alone between the 500 and 1000 steps if I'm really going for a world class polish. Seemed to help with some obsidian runs. So it makes sense that it would do well with glass.
If you just want to use it up and not waste it, I would treat it as a prepolish and work it in to your runs as you see fit. Sure can't hurt anything.
And welcome to the forum.

Try adding a bunch of water to the pan/slurry with the lap running and that may help break that suction to the pan. That seems to work for me anyway, but I have the grooved pans - which still get that suction.
Worth a try?

I wouldn't dress a green wheel.
Never had much use for / luck with green wheels. Wouldn't ever buy another.
Would a 100 grit wheel help ya any or you need the coarser grit for sure.

Others can handle the obsidian tumbling questions. (I prefer tin oxide for obsidian, but CO should work fine) Just wanted to say - Heck of a first post here. That's how it should be done! Welcome to the forum.

Captbob, are you going shopping in the 99¢ section? LOL NEVER! Just looking through specific rock searches by "Newly Listed" option. Personally, I'd throw a rock out in the yard before listing one for 99¢ Just not worth the effort. I can't even imaging posting a listing for anything under 50 bucks. During Christmas shipping season that would probably have to be raised to $500!

sell items for 99¢ ?? I'm not talking about a 99¢ opening bid where the final price may be much higher, but items that will probably not get any bids or go any higher if someone does bite. I have seen this for years, and not with sellers that sell a lot of items to make money by volume selling. And it seldom seems to be a feedback rating boost ploy. Regardless, whether selling a lot of items for 99¢ or just a few, how can it be worth the time to photograph, list, pack and ship something like that? Just looking through some rock listings and had the time to ask... (and maybe procrastinating as I plan to go Christmas shopping today)
