Very cool. In the garage? Hook it up to the water bib for your washing machine if your laundry is out there.

How well did your 36 grit break down? I've had problems with anything coarser than 46/70 breaking down in my 15 lb barrels.
I would run 60/90 after 36, but I'm OCD that way. Why move to smaller barrels? Do you not have enough volume to keep them in the 6 lb barrel? Maybe add some ceramics or pea gravel to make up the volume if that is the case.

We need to head down to Zapata. There was about a 5 acre industrial storage lot covered with Rio's in Zapata that I asked permission to collect on. Perfect, big cobbles. The owner looked at me as crazy and denied me dang it. Again, I should have thought to hand over some greenbacks !! Bet $40 would have filled my car 3 times over(600 pounds). I also got rejected from entering the largest quarry for 100 miles up and down the Rio there. I asked around and found out he owns Zapata NAPA. He had no interest in letting me in his quarry. Would not accept a signed legal release, greenbacks, not nada. It was perfect, located right in the large bend of the river in prime agate dumps. Next time I will try again. *cough**cough**cough*
no... I do not have a cold

Now why ya figure the center of the end has the most wear? On the Thumler's AR 12 there is a end disk, not sure what it is made of, that wears in the center first. These end lids need to be replaced usually once a year before the center wears through. Seems the outer edges would have more rock contact. Engineer reasoning for center wear?

Heck of a good idea if you have pets round that might get hurt by a trap.
Might try something like this outside for the fruit rats - with bigger entry holes. Big enough holes for a rat but not a squirrel.

Is there a thread where you posted what you experienced and the steps you used in your failed attempt?
Following Thumler's beginner level instructions was probably the problem...
I would be happy to help ya come out with better results, as "world class" tumbles are quite possible using only a rotary tumbler.
caveat: I can't say (guarantee) that for 3 lb barrels as I have never used a barrel that small. May be the same, but I wouldn't know. Just sayin' that great tumbled rocks are just as possible using a rotary only as with using a rotary then finishing in a vibe.
Just takes time time = patience
Rotary switching to vibe = same results, just faster. I just don't care that much to worry about how long the rocks take. Still being new to this, you may want to see the results sooner rather than later. All good.

Doing polish in a rotary tumbler is not a wise thing to attempt, unless you are dry tumbling with corn cob, apparently. wow.... That may be the least true thing I have ever seen posted on this forum in the 12 years that I have been here. There are world class tumblers here that do all their finishing in a vibe. I will happily go up against all of them using a rotary tumbler. (no offense vibe guys!!!) Mine will just take longer. MUCH longer
Never even considered dry polishing. Might be an interesting change of pace with a very few rock types, but it certainly isn't necessary.

Wonder why I do everything backwards...?
I dump the barrel into a bucket of water then pick the rocks out (placing them in a 2nd smaller water bucket) then with the rocks out I just dump the bead water through the strainer.
Same if I am using ceramics. Rocks out then deal with the rest.
Maybe it is easy for me because I don't have many small rocks in my runs?

I'll BE BACK! THE TERMINATOR, of rock polishing. 😉 Quality over quantity there Mr. Terminator ... MacGyver of building shit maybe!
If jamesp isn't in the room.

Just a thought, but I'm guessing that you want two different speeds. Fast for the coarse grinding stage and slow/normal for all the later steps. If that is the case, why not just have two different drive shaft pulleys that you could easily swap out in a couple minutes to change the barrel RPMs? OR....Better yet, build two roller levels and have the pulleys run one level fast and one slow/normal, so that you can be doing fast grinding/shaping on one level and the rest on the slow/normal level? Best of both worlds being able to run both speeds at the same time.
This is what I would do rather than all that MacGyver stuff.

Put a couple drops of vinegar on it. If it bubbles, that may be calcite.
Tough to make a call from the pictures, but calcite is my guess.
Quartz is way harder than calcite. A scratch test may help also.
