Well, I'm out. My meetings go from 4pm Tuesday to 5pm Thursday. That leaves me only 2 days of hounding with 4 days of driving between Dallas and Alpine (2 round trips). On top of that, my 14 yr old son broke his arm snow boarding. It's a little hard to hound with one good arm. Oh well, maybe next year (if the gang decides to go). Chuck

Harley, it all depends on the timing. The full moon is not going to help, but if the flare hits right then the northern lights are expected to be seen at high latitudes. www.spacew.com/www.spaceweather.com/Chuck

Hey Robin,
I'm really sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope you get to the bottom of it. Don't hurt anybody: your daughter and your wife need you at home.

So maybe we'll do WWR on Sunday, Stillwell Monday and 1/2 day Tuesday. Maybe I can arrange a trip with Teri for Friday.

Let's see, $0.40/gm x 28 gms/oz x 16 oz/lb = $179.20 per lb!!! Yikes!
Forget about the $2.25/gm stuff. As Roller said, that's $1000/lb. That's beyond Fairburn pricing and I think Fairburns are prettier.
Way out of my checking account.

I agree with Don. As he said, you can certainly use diamond on leather (smooth side), but you'll want to use a silicone extender fluid, not water.
3000 diamond belt would still be a pre-polish. You'd want to go to 8000 or 14,000 to avoid polish altogether. There are people here who go to 50,000 in an all diamond set up.

If all goes according to plan, my son and I will be there to hound Sunday and Monday, drive to Dallas Tuesday, drive back to Alpine Thursday, and hound Friday and Saturday before heading back to Dallas and home on Sunday. We'll be flying into Dallas, so we'll probably stay in Alpine because I can't manage the logistics of getting our camping gear down there in a couple of suitcases.
Looking forward to it!

Ken: Did it throw a lot of water?

Generally you want to put in your rocks wet and add the polish. Watch the action. If it slows down add tiny amounts of water until the action returns to normal. If the polish is too wet to abrade the rocks then it isn't doing anything.
Hope that helps, Chuck

That's good to know. I may have to ship my tent, sleeping bag, etc.
One more thing: don't drive with your headlights on during the day. You become a Ranger magnet.

No, I don't think there is a border patrol stop on 385. At least I don't remember one. Be careful with having exposed rock in Big Bend. Collecting is prohibited, so you'll want to have receipts for what you bring through. Spike: that was the only piece I found, but it's a nice one! I just checked the weather. Avg. low is 39 degrees, so it's going to get chilly at night. Anybody have a dog I can borrow for the night? At least the avg. high is 71 degrees... Chuck

There are several types of Geiger counters. Many of them are survey meters (think post blast) and don't have effective ranges for small doses. This is a great resource: www.civildefensemuseum.com/cdmuseum2/supply/radkits.htmlIn addition to power supplies, you also will be challenged with calibration. Chuck

I'm coming back to this thread late because I didn't think I would be able to go. Things have changed and I may be able to go for a couple of days because I'll be in Dallas for business.
I've been to Stillwell Ranch to collect. There is _lots_ of flint. I also found a 20 lb. palm bog root. I found some agate, but not much. No doubt there is more there as the ground is covered in rock. Digging is allowed. You pay only $0.50/lb. It's definitely not a fancy place and the store was no great shakes. Keep your expectations low and you may be pleasantly surprised. The owner had a big (20"?) HP in back and boxes of rough.
It is every bit of an hour between WWR and Stillwell. The shortest way is through Big Bend and you're limited to 45 mph, as I recall. It may be a horse a piece going north to Alpine and down. Don't even think about speeding; there were lots of Texas Rangers around looking for illegals. There is a rock shop south of WWR before you get into Big Bend. Big Bend is definitely worth seeing.
I'm glad Rodney posted the info. on Teri. I met her at the Alpine Antelope Lodge, which has a pretty nice display of rocks/minerals in the lobby, but could not remember her contact info.
Jan and Trey were very nice to me and my family when we went. Only a half day, so we didn't get to collect much and I didn't have much luck with the biscuits. We were allowed to dig, provided we filled the holes. Sorry to hear things are what they were.
