My box of rough arrived today and my only regret is that I can't get it in the tumblers right away. Very nice rough thanks James.

Plastic pellets are meant to cushion and "slow the action". Pellets probably your problem, the barrels are good as far as I've experienced. The rest of your formula sounds okay.

Often times these grit kits have something like 1200 AO as a polish instead of an actual polish which is a much smaller mesh. 1200 AO can impart a shine but takes much longer and often you get a matte finish.

reeniebeany I have cut back on tumbling lately but have the UV18 and like it a lot. When I was going "full speed" I had three twelve pound rotary barrels going 24/7/365. With that my normal year would be in the neighborhood 8 batches in the UV18. Bearing in mind I like my rocks near flaw free so my stage one is sometimes long, your results could vary.

I have done sodalite in rotary and vibe. I never adjusted my time, 21 days rotary, 72 hours vibe. If you have a formula that has been working for you I'd stick to that.

jawsjr I have a UV 18 so I think I have some insight. I think that there is not enough media in your vibe. You should be using ceramic cylinders and or small rocks. Those rubber spacers are not heavy/dense enough. Also the bowl needs to be fuller like just below the top of the center cone. In the vid I see a lot of empty space and thumlers vibes can be very aggressive. I would go back to 220 on those. Filling the extra space should stop the obsidian beating itself up. Some I did in my uv18 IMG_4582 by Ken Vancil, on Flickr

Hello! I've been seeing a lot of glass talk and I don't want to miss this boat! I found some great glass to tumble at the local thrift store so I'd like to get started! I'm going to start with 120 grit for a few days, well cushioned. The only question is- rotary or vib? Thank you and happy new year! I just finished some glass that was all done in the vibe. Some were preshaped, some not. Used a mix of ceramic and small agates/quartz as media and a double dose of 220. Preshaped done in 1 to 2 runs to my satisfaction, non-shaped took 4 to 5 runs. I did notice that the slurry produced was very sticky and needed a little extra attention. It can be done all vibe but shaping in rotary is probably more efficient. In past rotary runs with man made glass I had gas build up. You'll need to watch for that.

Those small electric motors are generally not worth time and money to rebuild. Most of the parts that one would replace in a larger motor are epoxy glued in place in smaller motors. Bearings/bushings are small and difficult to replace. I suspect parts could cost as much as a new motor.

I do the same for character ... only ever squirt it clean with 2$ spray bottle ... never had issues with cross contamination ... just keep wet until sprayed ...

Nice piece Jugglerguy , the good pieces of chert are rare-ish down here in the flat lands also. As to the crescent marks ... I think the larger the rock the more likely this occurs. Had a batch of agates once with a like 3/4 fist size Montana. It had a ton of the marks. Upon inspecting the rest I noticed that smallish 3/4" Montanas had no marks. Sizes in between had various amounts but the larger the most. I have tried thicker slurries but still get the crescents. I'm with Drummond Island Rocks in not being on the clay band wagon but have considered trying. The originator of this uses large diameter smooth sided homemade barrels. Larger commercial barrels are multi sided. As I understand the clay process less volume is required. So if it truly is faster it's still less material at once. Also as I understand the clay process grit is added more than once per week. I read an old lapidary article about speeding up the rough grind. The "secret" was fresh coarse grit at 2 to 3 day intervals as opposed to 7 day intervals. Fresh coarse grit does far more cutting than broken down grit ...
