I just got a table top 7" tile saw, they are loud, but far less expensive than an actual lapidary saw. the kerf is pretty wide but maybe that's normal..... Anyway although these are called "saws" they actually work more like gridners and that's why they won't cut you like a wood saw will. There's a post about a super grinder or ultimate grinder I forget what it's called, but it basically has a bunch of diamond blades all stacked next to each other to fast grind/shape rock.

yeah that's kind of what I meant, there's a post with pictures of someone cutting out a disc from a cutting board, others have mentioned using marine carpet, those ideas all where in the same category, figured if they where all compiled into one thread it would be helpful.

really enjoying the forums here, thought it might be helpful if there was a compiled list of what people use for lap pads/mounts
after reading some things people mentioned (I forget who) getting a plastic cutting board, carpet, tiles etc, well anyway if you have time please post
what you have used
where you got it
and how you like it, thanks.

I've been a rock hound for a long long time, I'm to the point that there isn't much I don't have. For a long while I have wanted to try polishing and shaping but the cost is just too much. Currently I have a bunch of odds and ends of different machines that I will be putting together now that I have looked at the pictures in the homemade section. Building stuff yourself not only costs less, but it's a lot of fun, for me anyway.
