definitely not claimed, however, unless I find another, the river is not worth claiming... I say that because it is massive and travels about 80 or so miles before it gets to the area where I found it. It was all glacial covered at one point in time as well Where i found it is unheard of to find anything.
I do know a mountian that this could have came from though.
I'll be using my detector a bit to try and locate more.

What test did you use for platinum? The killer test is specific gravity since Pt is incredibly dense. The S.G. of pure Pt is 21.5 but it's often found in association with other Pt group metals like rhodium, osmium, palladium etc., so S.G. often ranges from 14.0 to 19.0. The high gravity, color (gray-white, metallic luster) and malleability are typical, along with Pt's infusibility and insolubility in acid. We used the common precious metals test kit which tests by the chemical nature. These kits are very good and accurate for testing metals, Jewelers use them a lot.

Makes me want to bring my detector out more when I go hounding. I will only sell it if I find another that is just as good or better, although it would pay for the shed I need to build so I can keep all my rocks

In the early gold rush days, platinum was discarded by the miners. The true value was not know at the time. The Chinese miners knew better and kept it. To my surprise it tested positive for platinum... not really known to have any of that locally, nor any native metal... apart from small gold

I find that having options is more inclusive for everyone than having one set option. This month I will add in an option for those that don't rockbound. Apparently, you aren't connecting the lack of participation and your themes. Tommy has told you they are directly connected. I find that the options you provide have few folks wanting to play. Simple themes and less options equals more participants. State your goal, do solid repeated A-B testing, follow success up to more success. Have fun! Good luck! I am going to stick with simple themes like for this month (April). what a user takes the theme to be is up to them.. since it is self found it could meen on the ground to one person or in a rock shop, depends on the person's definition. Speaking of self found... has anyone tried to cab a sea shell? I have a few colored ones I found in NJ and a few fossils from NY. Always wanted to cab eventually but they are currently burred. I think you are kidding ... in which case I have to applaud you for a very funny twist on the over-complication conversation.. well-played sir! nop being serious, the fossil ones the shell itself wouldn't be cabbed although it would be polished, I would cab the surrounding rock so the shell looks inset. As for the actual shell i'm not sure but I heard of people doing it before. I have to locate my fossil material but it is something ive been wanting to try for some time. Probably won't be this month that i do it though. Ive got some AK material i'd like to do the same with but the things are in a hard substance. Looks like "coquina" or so its called locally. I know a local person who makes cabs out of moose hooves... seems odd but looks decent

I gave options that were simple and easy and a hard one for both months, February had both hearts and valentines colors as themes, someone could have made a pink oval if they wanted. This month someone could have made a green circle if they wanted. I find that having options is more inclusive for everyone than having one set option. This month I will add in an option for those that don't rockbound. You're missing my point. I know this isn't just about me but you keep asking why participation is down so I'm answering you why MY participation is down. You are complicating and over-thinking the themes. Do you seriously think I want to be the person who "optioned" for making a red cab in February when everyone else busted their ass and made a heart? I see your point now. 1 theme 1 option "kiss" Speaking of self found... has anyone tried to cab a sea shell? I have a few colored ones I found in NJ and a few fossils from NY. Always wanted to cab eventually but they are currently burred.

April 2016 Friendly Cab Contest /Challenge This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation whatever the outcome. Theme: Self found things Rules: - Cabs entered must be completed by the deadline (they can be started before the month). All entries will require a photo of the slab or rock, preform and finished cab. So no cabs pulled from the drawer. You can enter as many photos of the finished cab as you like (within reason) on the same post. If you decide to add another photo later on, please edit your original post. Things like intarsias, carvings, jewelry, and composite type cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified) in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs. It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the item with or without a jump ring, as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.) We ask that all entries submitted to this contest be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). any duplicates will not be included in the voting list. Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the material, the process or what ever else you would like to share. Also, don't forget to include the name of the material. If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first. Prize : Read more: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/74069/march-2016-fcc#ixzz44dRSkZDq

Regardless of the theme, I make it so that it is something everyone can do at any level. I am actually not too surprised at the lack of entries this month but this is the start of hounding season so I imagine a lot of people are searching for stuff. Please listen to Scott without getting butthurt and feeling like you have to rationalize it all - he is exactly right on the money. We appreciate you reviving the contests but you are way over-thinking it and the themes become convoluted and confusing. I have given you similar advice several times including doing a simple "shape-o-the-month" contest (ovals, squares, hearts, freeform, etc. etc.) For instance - February was originally listed in your Themes thread as "valentines colors" which would have been very inclusive but when you posted the contest you changed the focus to heart shapes and every entry was a heart shape. As I told you I don't do hearts - you think I want to be the only person posting to the original valentines colors theme when everyone is doing hearts? March could have been SO simple - either "green" as Scott said or "oval" (Easter egg) but you started posting flower patterns and I was thinking here we go with February all over again. Thank you for the rah-rah desire to push and motivate us try new things - some here appreciate it and value it but it's wasted on me and ultimately its causing participation to wane. My advice would be to give us a one-word theme and leave it alone. For April I'm fine with self-collected but as Scott said a good percentage of our cabbers were immediately disqualified.

I'm thinking as a beginner, your themes are too complicated. "Green" for March spring and St Patty's day is more likely get entries. April - self hounded sounds good, but many live in places that isn't possible orvare otherwise unable to collect stones. May I suggest and "Easter" or "earth day" theme? I am a beginner and I want to improve thus is what the themes are geared toward. Almost all the cabs I made thus far were for these contests. As far as self hounded, it is not limited to the state one lives in, props for those that have. If one found it on a trip to another state or country that is fine, I know that we all travel at some point and always seem to bring back rocks . I know that not all the states have the best rock hounding but there is still cool stuff to be found. I know in NY which is not particularly a rockhounding state, there are agates, jaspers and other cool stuff to be found... If it wasn't burred I would try my iron ore from NY or my NJ fluorescent material which could be considered old stock seeing what is left. Regardless of the theme, I make it so that it is something everyone can do at any level. I am actually not too surprised at the lack of entries this month but this is the start of hounding season so I imagine a lot of people are searching for stuff. Easter/ earth day theme was built into this month even though I called it life. Might call it that next time around. I'm not really sure what else I could add into the self collected theme. If you have an idea that relates let me know. I guess I can add local mined for those that have disabilities and can't find stuff but can buy locally found stuff.

Who else is going to make something green or something that has a lifely picture?
I'm debating on 2 different green pieces.. one that looks like an arial forest map and another that I'm thinking of making into a fish.
