February 2016 Friendly Cab Contest /Challenge
This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation whatever the outcome.
Theme: Valentines day: heart shaped cabs (any color) and/or cabs with the colors of reds, pinks, purples, whites, peach which are bright or pale.
Rules: -
Cabs entered must be completed by the deadline (they can be started before the month). All entries will require a photo of the slab or rock, preform and finished cab. So no cabs pulled from the drawer.
You can enter as many photos of the finished cab as you like (within reason) on the same post. If you decide to add another photo later on, please edit your original post.
Things like intarsias, carvings, jewelry, and composite type cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified) in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs. It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the item with or without a jump ring, as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.)
We ask that all entries submitted to this contest be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). any duplicates will not be included in the voting list.
Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the material, the process or what ever else you would like to share.
Also, don't forget to include the name of the material.
If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first.
Prize :

I should be cabbing this on the weekend This is more of a test piece to see how much I like it to decide if I want to slab more of this material. This is silicated limestone I'm not sure but i'm hoping it has some pyrite in it. Only 2.25 hrs to spare! 2 different lights and the shine.. this was some very hard material.. took a lot longer than most cabs I have made. Still looks better under my lapidary light.. a bit darker than I was hoping for, but this is a darker piece f the material.

I thought making a heart shaped cab out of as single piece of stone without any gluing would be impossible, they are now my best sellers. One doesn't need carving wheels to make hearts, I wish I had some 8" wheels to make them on though but my 6" have enough room for my typical sized hearts.
I learned very fast the angles in which you can or can't do on a cabbing machine. Granted I hardly have any expensive material other than a few slabs, I am not really worried about breaking things though and haven't broken something yet that was solid.
I challenge everyone to try it and see what happens
if your worried about breaking something, maybe take a piece of common material to work with, post the results regardless of the outcome.
I know for fact that they can be done on standard wheels as I have made 8 hearts already and they all sold. If you want to see examples of the ones I made look through my facebook photos.
I'm going to finish my colorblind cab this weekend no matter what I need to do to finish it.
As for the animal, reguardless of the theme i'm still making one myself... not sure what one yet.

Please don't start editing posts. Just add new pictures to this end of the thread. I would do that as well, as for the 1st post of this topic I think others would appreciate it if all the info and things available for sale are on one post, I could be wrong but I think it will help.

This thread is going to get very messy over time but how much for some of the crystal plates? sizes? close up photos? You realize setting up an etsy store is free? .20 cents for every item you list then 3% of the sale goes to etsy. Very cut and dry with no hassles. You can pick the shipping cost for every item. That would end the confusion over what is available too. What is your grand plan to help him sell this stuff online? Is it just going to be threads like this? Amethyst, smokey, citrine Thanks Chuck Thanks captbob for the ideas/ suggestions Chuck, he does have a fluorite piece however the price sticker fell off or was not put on so i'm not going to advertise it until there it a price. (the owner just feft out of state today) I am not sure about the smokey, they may be in storage or sold since Christmas. he does have this piece of citrine in shop (I can get a better pic if you want it) along with some amythest cathedrals which I will post soon.

No way is that horse head considered a cabochon. Maybe the horse's ass would? haha I have a cab that turned out looking like a cow pie, maybe that would qualify. Glenn - again not to beat a dead horse (pun #1) or start another jump on Glenn thread, but I think you have a tendency to miss the big picture. On one hand you are asking for participation and on the other hand you saddle the contest (pun #2) with a 'niche' design theme that most of us won't participate in. No amount of rah-rah cheerleading or "this is how it's done" pictures could or will ever inspire me to create an animal shape. I bet if you did a poll (please don't) and asked cabbers if they had ever intentionally created an animal shape cabochon the answer would be very very small. I would say ditch the idea while you still can and put up something a little easier and within reach of most cabbers even if it's outside their comfort zone - like what was suggested by micellular - freeform or asymmetric (uneven sides) etc. Next months theme will be hearts, as for the animals I created a theme thread and someone thought the animals would be cool (only 1 person). I forget if there was another response to the animals n that thread or not. I ask that further theme discussion be brought to that thread.

I'm not interested in making animal shapes, and I don't have the tools to do. I think it also edges too far into carving territory. I would not participate in that theme, and if other people say that they won't either, we should come up with an alternate. Maybe something more general like freeform or asymmetric. If a majority of the people actively participating don't like it i'd be open, however both of those examples were made on a standard bench cabbing machine with regular wheels. It is a challenge but it can be done.

I'd like to put that on hold with you if it's still in stock until you have a size. If you could PM a couple more pictures (different angles) along with the size, I would appreciate it. Thanks! Will do

Price and size on the mahogany obsidian sphere center back row in this picture please if still in stock. Additional pictures would be appreciated if you have time. I believe it is on the shelf still, it is fairly large and heavy. I think one side is more black than the ones you see but i'll have to look again. $65-

As for all the themes, we have had lots of participation so i'm under the impression people are having fun with it, I hope It adds an interesting wrinkle. If you really want to level the playing field, my former rock club does a "shape of the month" contest (ie: Jan = oval, Feb = rectangle, etc.). For instance I can't compete with someone like Roger and others who produce bad-ass needle sharp points which are very impressive compared to my typical rounded tips freeforms or ovals. The question then becomes do we really need to level the playing field or shouldn't the more skilled artists be encouraged to put those skills on full display and win? BTW, I think your "animal shapes" theme is going to have crickets chirping on that contest. As they say on Shark Tank ... "I'm out..." I think that is next month for hearts if I recall. I know that I won't win because i'm not as highly skilled as others yet, but I participate anyway as a learning experience. Other people (new or intermediate or oldies) should participate for the fun of it and to learn as well. As i said the prize should not matter, and we had a great turnout a few months back that didn't have a prize... As for animal shapes I know it can be done the bird is from cobbledstones and I made the horse head with satin finish

I took the Facebook pictures to be a general representation of what the guy had in his shop. If he sold something along the way since the pictures were posted, well that's what he is in business for. Kinda figure that pictures that Glenn takes and posts are available items. Gonna be a bit of a challenge selling from an inventory that he (Glenn) doesn't control, but from what I am seeing so far, Glenn is doing his best under these unusual circumstances. Add to that that Glenn isn't there everyday as he has other things going on in his life and I gotta admit that this is going better than I had expected. Looking forward to more pictures. If he had come back as soon as he could and said "sorry bro' he no longer has that one" I would be fine. Instead what I got was "its not unakite. It's marble". That indicates inventory to me. I waited a week and had to prod it out of him. His sense of service and customer relations is so far lacking, that I expect him to attempt to rationalize his way out of every oopsed up deal. I, for one, have decided the headache is over. I follow Einstein's theory of insanity. That precludes me from pursuing anything with this seller ever again. Thanks for your input Bob. I informed you exactly what he told he on the day he told me, he brought in something today he thought was it but wasn't the same thing I shown him his photo again and he said that he probably already sold it and forgot he did back at Christmas. His shop inventory is always changing, someone came in today and bought over $400 worth of rock. Those jade carvings, if someone comes in and wants it (and it is not on hold which none of them are) he will sell it that day and if i'm not working I won't know. The only way I could garente 100% that it is available is if I bought it and I just can't do that as I need to save for an apartment or house depending on what happens to the place i'm at now. I am just being up front with everyone as I know info. Once he is gone I will only have the items that are in shop available. To be honest i'm not making a whole lot of profit on a $20 item I will take some time to get photos of the new stuff he brought in.

here are more photos taken off his facebook. It doesn't have his rough per say as he doesn't keep much shop but it gives a general idea of some of the other stuff. When I take photos I will have prices if they are available. I know he has a lot of small brazil agate slabs polished on both sides for $1 and $1.5 It says Facebook page. But nowhere does it indicate that it did not reflect current inventory. When I called dibs, I expected it to be set aside until a deal was transacted. I waited for your reply for days and had to prod your to find out it wasnt available. That young man, is a fantastic way to burn bridges. Wanna make money online? Go shovel snow. I've wasted enough energy. I'm going away, and most likely never coming back. Best wishes. I can't agree with you more... I almost told him that myself that if you(him) doesn't have it why am I wasting my time trying to sell something he "might" have burred.

He looked through his spheres and couldn't find it so he put it on his list of items to pick up from Tuscon, he is leaving tomorrow. So, let me get this straight. I implore you that only photos sell goods online. Then u put photos of items not available up. I offer to make purchase, only to learn days later it is not available. Even with photos, you are selling from an empty shelf. I sincerely doubt I'm interested in this or anything you ever sell, ever again. Like Trump, I leave room to reverse my position. But the likelihood that I even open a forsale add from you is precariously close to zero. What a oops waste of time. Thanks for absolutely nothing. I said those first photos were off of his facebook page and may or may not be available, unless I tool the photo myself I can't garentee it is available from those first batch of photos. Also unless I set something aside, if someone walks into his store and wants something, he is going to sell it to the person fcfs.. If he sells something that I set aside than I will be mad for wasting my time. I have already told him once that he needs to know if he has an item or not and if not than don't mention it. (he brought another thing in he thought was the same but wasn't where I had to argue with him that it is not the same) I ask that you understand that this is on his end, If I sell any of my personal stuff (probably not) this won't happen (no end man to worry about)

As for the payment options there are a few options as of now only 2 or 3
The options currently for payment is to send it to me personally (in my name or account) via money order, paypal gift, or regular paypal (with added fee) and I will mail once paid.
I will send a photo or scanned copy of the actual shipping receipt so if there is any post office damage you can get a full refund as all items mailed will be fully insured.
He and I will only accept refunds as long as the item has not been shipped, once shipped it is yours (same as in-store policy) The items are not mine therefor I can't return them and I would not like them to become mine even thought I do want every rock I see (all profit is going in my house / living fund).
For new people with less than 25 posts on here, I will only accept payments via usps money order or paypal via gift. This is to help protect myself from people just joining to buy on this exclusive online offers from those that may be scammers.
For those that already have Items picked out and are in the store, please give me a day or so to pack and calculate shipping cost (if flat rate and not exceeding $50 calculating is not needed)
