Been hitting in pretty hard the past few days. Don't fret: I'm leaving tomorrow for a swim meet in Lincoln and then watching the Olympic trials, so we'll be picture free from me for awhile. Again all self collected stuff. Are you heading to Lincoln, NE? That's a long drive for a swim meet! Are your kids doing the Capital City Invite? We're not in that one, but we're not too far from there. I am volunteering for the Trials this week and next quite a bit. It's going to be a LOT of fun, but downtown will be crazy with the CWS and the Trials at the same time. Safe travels! Yes. We're at Cap city right now on break between prelims and finals. We have 90 swimmers in the meet, and 7 in the trails. Most of the team will be watching the trials on Sunday: it's a fun week. I thought it was hot in Greeley.

My sentiments - where the heck do you live ? Got a spare room, I'll clean your septic tank, paint the inside of your trash cans, whatever... your self collected 'variety' is cause for envy. Spare room. Not yet, but you can help me build one. Thanks Jamesp for the envy. If you knew me you'd take it back.

Funny thing about those Horney Toads: they stay still, you're lucky to find 'em. And when you do, you're, well, lucky. Keeping with the Jamesp motif: much shorter time in the first stage.
Out, out brief candle, Colin

Don't lose courage man. I couldn't view your pix, but I'm sure things are OK. Give me your address, and I'll send you a small box of local pet wood, jaspers, chalcedony, and a baggie full of rough grit. I'll grind the cobbles down so it will only take about 6-9 weeks for the rough grind. These stones won't need plastic pellets.
Others will chime in with solid advice about polishing who have much more experience.
I won't be able to post until Friday of next week because I will be in the great state of Nebraska at a couple of swim meets.
Just keep on rolling. Colin

Been hitting in pretty hard the past few days. Don't fret: I'm leaving tomorrow for a swim meet in Lincoln and then watching the Olympic trials, so we'll be picture free from me for awhile. Again all self collected stuff. Latest batch without smalls. I had a few more in there but the neighborhood kids snagged 'em up. Gray Noco agate/chalcedony. It's a bit different than the butterscotch stuff. Don't know if it's agate, or chalcedony, or idoevenoite. My favorite. Whispy clouds idoevenoite. Looks like it has surface cracks but is completely smooth. otherside, pinecone, smooth more striped jasper Smokey quartz with rainbowessence. pet wood with blueberry milk Thanks for the looks. Still working on photography. Colin

I like the one that hasn't been tumbled yet. It looks like a skull with one red eye and a blue mouth. Great photos.

Awesome some rocks. I like them all. How long did you have them in coarse grind?

That was an easy one garage. Just happened to have some old AO 80 from way back to try. I was really trying to remove some bruises on some delicate quartz from the rotary. Knowing AO, that it does not break down as much as rounds and polishes, results not surprising other that the speed at which it rounded and polished. A consideration for those with vibratory barrel wear issues. Yes, it is 80 grit but only for a very short period was it sharp. I think SiC 120/220 SiC 220 SiC 500 wears vibe bowls out a crap load faster due to 1-4 day runs and the razor sharp particles. A few things: We use what we have. I stopped using 500 grit because I ran out. I have probably 5 pounds of 220 SIC, so I'll use it until it's gone. I've been running one Lot-O bowl for over a year with 220. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts. How did the quart turn out in comparison? So, now you no longer do the two-step? It's more of a waltz...that should be softer on that delicate, Southern Belle, quartz. Keep on waltzin' and rollin' Colin

I think hte wood is just a bit older than the Coors can. The wood probably tastes better, too.

Cool buttes, never been to the buttes proper, I just hit the grasslands East of Fort Collins, Pawnee is huge. The Buttes are outstanding for exploring, but no rocks. I thing the wonderful geology that created the Buttes also covered everything underneath in many centuries of fine Buttes' powder. Colin

Good job on those. Wandering around in the grasslands out there you'll find some pretty decent stuff. I lived South of Fort Morgan for awhile on the edge of the sand hills-no rocks there. Do need to watch out though-a couple of sites in the books are actually deeded land. At worst, someone may ask you to leave. Nice shine on those, keep after it. Russ Always keep an eye out for artifacts out in that area as well. In the 80s I had much less respect for the abstract idea of land ownership and had a few run-ins with supposed owners. But hey I was a dumb kid. Now, as a dumb adult, I'm hypersensitive to such things. Truth be told I never found anything but bones, rocks, and old beer cans. I was always hopping to find an arrowhead or Antelope skull...no dice. The Grasslands are amazing. I just wish people would pick up their bullet casings and dead clay pigeons after shooting.

I don' t even know what any of this is other than petwood. This is what I mostly find around and about. The Coors can was given to me 35 years ago. I've been picking up petwood a few years longer than I've been picking up old beer cans. Group of common stuff. This one is odd. Found this in the cobble mix in the landscaping at my local bike store. I asked the owner if I could have it. He said sure but I needed to have a shot of Jame-o with him first (I should have been a bike wrench). Amazing piece completely agatized or opalized or whateverized. I imagine it's pet-bamboo, but like I said I don't even know what any of this stuff is. This one is fun. We found this on a friend's property on the Grand Mesa in Grand Junction about a year ago. The vein is completely crystalized. My wife found it (I think) and we keep it on the windowsill above the kitchen sink. Great thread, Colin

Good angle of photography. I like the one behind the supposed Bill. I've done some "Yoga in the Park" and never saw anyone taking pix. Don't judge me: Yoga is almost as good as beer.
I ain't too bright cause I pick up rocks and put em in my pocket.
