Hey zarguy that's a great Holt Canyon cab and whoopee its double sided! How big of a hole do you drill? Do you use a hole drill? I drill a 2.5 mm hole. I use these bits - You can get these on eBay, Wish, AliExpress, etc. About $5 for 20 if you find the right deal. I drill under water with a Covington variable speed lapidary drillpress. I start with a small bit - under 2mm. Then I use a 2.5mm twist bit to enlarge the hole. Then I bevel the edges with a cone shaped sintered bit on my Foredom. Take care Mr. Bill or Senor Billermo! I've decided to give this contest a try. Holt Canyon Jasp/agate self collected May 2020. Two different outdoor lighting situations
This is cut double sided. I will drill it & put it on a cord.

Try turning the saw on & moving the blade pulley by hand. Kind of like push-starting a car. Lynn

Thanks for the trip report & pictures. I did yard work on Sat I love the banding in the reds and yellows. Those blue fortifications add some nice contrast. I'd love to see any slabs or cabs that come from those chunks. Lynn

I love Holt Canyon agate/jasper, but it is hard to find pieces that are fracture-free. I'm very selective on what I bring home and even then have to stabilize many chunks, slabs, preforms & cabs. In other words - I stabilize it at all stages if necessary.
Hxtal is my epoxy of choice. It's relatively expensive and has a long cure time (heat speeds that up), but it's worth it. Good luck with the material you bought. Lynn

When I read "Dremel cabs" in the first line, I wasn't expecting much. Then I saw the photos!
You've made some great shapes and got a great finish. When & if you get a cabbing machine, you're going to excel.
Keep it up! Lynn

Nice bright reds & metalics. Looks like some beach-tumbled pieces I found near San Simeon/Cambria. Lynn

Tommy Thanks for posting your trip report. The terrain looks beautiful & not too hot from the comfort of my office. I bet the trip recharged your batteries. Lynn

Like this: Damage marked. I never used it but assume it's an expanding drum and it is 8x3. It was on my stardiamond machine and I removed it to add wheels. I also have a mfrb. If you want it, email me a prepaid mailing label. That's an 8 x 3" drum, but not an expanding drum. The OP would have to be able to get strips of abrasive instead of belts. Lynn

Tommy I don't care about the contest. I want to see pictures! Rocks, landscapes, rocks & more rocks. Lynn Haha right! Lots and lots of pictures are on the way, I promise. I meant to cut a couple of small rocks today then start on the trip report but other stuff got in the way. BTW, I don't know if you saw my note in your thread but the whole Utah thing is growing legs. Our daughter is moving to Salt Lake end of June and we're going to help her driver the uhaul and moving stuff. It would be great to see you guys again (and 1dave too) even if nothing more than a quick collecting agates trip. Very cool! Yes, c'mon down to Southern Utah. We'll go hound something. Lots of choices depending on the timing & how long you can stay. Lynn

Win Glad you got out into nature. And pizza! Next time you're in Cedar City, stop by. Some friends & I are going to Topaz Mtn this weekend. It'll be my first time back since 1969! I'm not big on crystals, but it'll be a fun time away from yardwork. Lynn

The Southern Utah Rock Club went hounding at Holt Canyon last Sat May 23rd 2020. We hadn't met since Mar., nor had an outing. We limited it to 20 club members who had not been to Holt with the club. Later, the Governor raised the limit for gatherings to 50 people. We decided we'd allow 30. Everyone, as usual was like kids in a candy store. There's so much on the ground. Newbies want it all! I'm a little more selective. I've been a newbie. You should see my yard!
Here's my best piece. The largest is about 4" tall. Lynn
I cut this on Memorial Day: This link may or may not work. It's the first video I've posted here. www.facebook.com/lynn.alan.dalton/videos/pcb.10223212665564157/10223212704885140/?type=3&theater

leviathan21 Looks like a simple, yet functional machine! I would suggest eliminating much of the space in the middle by moving the inner bearings closer together. You may even be able to eliminate one of the inner bearings. Then you can move the splash trays & hoods closer together so that the outer bearings are outside the wet zone. This will also give you more space between wheels (you'd have to resize the spacers between wheels). This may require narrower bearing riser blocks. Lynn

NRG Wow! How exciting for you & Jeanine. The sweet retired life is going to be great. I don't know what rocks are found in that area, but I'm sure there's something good close by. Lynn Lynn, we may have to visit you for rocks. Or northern AZ or New Mexico or Texas.... 😎 Bring your RV and hang out a week or two! Thanks for the invite! We don't have an RV (yet!) There may be one in our future. As for visiting me for rocks, are you saying there's not much to hound in that part of Colorado? Or are you saying it's centrally located to all of those other rockhounding places you listed? BTW, the local club is going to Holt Canyon on May 23. Due to social distancing guidelines, we've limited attendance to 20 club members who have not gone there with the club already. I've been there a few times (I've lost track!), but I'm leading the trip. I can't wait. It's still my favorite place to hound. It replaced my agate beach I used to hound in the Bay Area. Lynn

My Raytech 10" trim/slab saw with a cheap Chinese blade leaves a very smooth surface, no saw marks show. It may be related to the feed speed. Lynn

I picked up a small gravity feed slab saw that was suppose to be 10 probably an 8 and I installed a nine inch blade. I had some extra larger motors and used one. Maybe I needed a better blade, but the gravity feed wasn't very good. The rock barely moved through the blade even though I tried different weights. It wasn't binding, it wasn't cutting and I wasn't interested in pushing the rock through. 8 & 9" blades are typically for trim saws. Perhaps with a different (thicker?) blade, it would cut better.
