Cool Machine, I saw one at Prineville a few years ago, unfortunately NFS or I would have one. Your wheels look like they have a lot of cabs left on them. As far as recoated wheels, I think I sent off info on a shop in ID doing them fairly inexpensively, Can't personally make a judgement but I think someone on RTH got the info and several on FB like them. Earthbrite rock shop in Caldwell, perhaps catmandewe is familiar with them. I have an address and phone # I can provide in a PM, but as I said, I haven't ordered or tried any yet.

I think I'll be really happy with it. And please do send the info if you get a chance. Even if they have some cabs left in them I'll need to do something eventually. Thanks!

So I bit the bullet and bought 2 wheels, 60 and 220 grit since they seemed to be the worst. I wasn't sure if I should get hard or soft so I went with hard since that was what's on there now. I also bought some 14,000 grit diamond paste. Played around a little more and did this one. Not a great shine, I used some paste that I had that is 8,000 grit- maybe I need a new pad? Also, this was another cracked "practice" preform that I had...

Looking good miketDoes your unit have a vertical flat disc on the end ? If so you might look into getting some diamond discs to swap on it. Easier then the paste- although likely more $$. My 6" unit has a 1/4 X 20 thread on the end that they sell "spin on discs" for. I can look it up if you have interest, just let me know. Patty

Cool cab, miket! It turned out great for a cracked practice piece. You have the process down. Your cabs look good. No need to work on cracky pieces anymore. I'm not sure what that material is. 8,000 doesn't always polish certain materials all the way. May have to hit it with the 14,000. Of course, it could be one of those materials that doesn't take a wet polish, too.

I've bought a bunch of the JB geysers. The ones being sold show a circle but they are really a rectangle. They work ok. The Genie geysers deliver more water, but they are a different design. Two JB geysers under a wheel works well.
I looked for wheels. The cheapest is JB. I will vouch for their soft wheels. Choices are limited other than DP Pixie. You might want to message Baltic Abrasives for 4 inch hard wheels. They are great. Jadecarver has 4 inch hard wheels but are out of stock for the coarser grits.

miket - I apologize. I was meaning to write more than what I did...but was interrupted! What kind of wheels did you go with? There's NOTHING like brand new hard wheels that cut like butter!! Interesting on the shine. I can't tell if that's a Fairburn...it looks like it could/should be. Too bad on the fracture...it's a killer looking cab regardless! I don't see why that shouldn't take a high polish. Hmmm...interesting.

Honestly I thought it was a Fairburn, too, but i wasn't sure. It should have taken a shine...

Nice looking machine miket. You’re going to love it. I’m partial to drip cooling but I’ve never used bubblers. It seems like they would cause grit transfer, but like I said, never used bubblers.

Your cab is beautiful, Mike! Hang onto it. You can always stabilize it when you get to doing that.
It does seem like it should have gotten a better polish. Even to 8000, it should have a pretty good polish. I wonder what happened? I can't really see any scratches. But, like Robin said- maybe it's just the stone.

I might just do that, usually the ones with cracks just disappear into a bag forever... 😁 I haven't looked in the tutorial section yet but it could be that I'm doing something wrong in the process.

miket, these are the spin on discs I was talking about, but it seems they are sold in 6" or 8", I couldn't find 4" ?
BUT I did find that you can get polishing heads (canvas, leather, etc) in 4". I found the smooth leather works great for using cerium after the 8000 diamond to bring out a shine.
Unfortunately I need to replace my 14000 diamond disc, as it has a rock in it & just introduces more scratches.

Thanks Patty. Tela mentioned those also, but I haven't taken the time to check it out yet. I'll keep these in mind, thanks again! 😁
